Cebu is bound to establish a new icon as the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Corp. (CCLEC) announced that the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) will be opened to motorists next week.
Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway
The opening of the inter-island bridge will be led by President Rodrigo Duterte on April 27. Its toll system will be regulated by Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the same company that manages some expressways in Luzon such as the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).
“We are happy and honored to have come to this point, opening the biggest infrastructure project in this part of the country,” said MPTC Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan. “We thank President Duterte for honoring us by being part of this historic event.”
A project that started in 2018
The 8.5-km CCLEX provides a faster route between Cebu City to Mactan via a toll road system. It is designed with motion sensors, speed sensors, and high-definition closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) for safety. At least 50,000 motorists are expected to traverse the inter-island bridge daily.
Moreover, motorcycles with an engine displacement ranging from 125cc to 399cc will be allowed to use the CCLEX. This decision was made as motorcycles have become the preferred mode of transportation of Cebuanos. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) recorded a total of 433,771 registered motorcycles below 400cc in Cebu.
Cebu's new iconic landmark
The CCLEX will be opened on a historic date, which is the 501st commemoration of the Kadaugan sa Mactan or Victory in Mactan. Motorists will be allowed to traverse the infrastructure using cash payments until June 2022 only.
“Not far from here 501 years ago, Cebuanos celebrated a victory in a pitched battle against a superior force. Today, we mark a different milestone, a modern victory not of arms but of engineering and construction that gave us such a beautiful structure that has now become an icon of Cebu,” added Pangilinan.
