All-new Toyota Wigo will debut soon in the Philippines: Report

It will be the hatch’s first-ever model change since arriving locally in 2014.

Since the all-new Toyota Wigo has already been launched in neighboring countries including Indonesia and Malaysia, we can’t help but wonder about its possible Philippine debut.

The all-new Toyota Wigo could be around the corner

But it looks like the waiting game might be ending as Autoindustriya reported that Filipinos will finally get behind the wheel of the all-new Wigo in the near future. This information was said to be disclosed by an insider who shared that the new hatchback will be arriving in the country “very soon.”

While no official specifications have been revealed, let’s see what we can expect based on models available in other markets.

One of the biggest changes is the use of a new unibody platform called the Daihatsu New Global Architecture A (DNGA-A). It also underpins the next-gen iteration of the Avanza, as well as the Raize. For the uninitiated, the three said vehicles are rebadged versions of Daihatsu models Agya, Xenia, and Rocky.

The new Wigo comes out as a bigger hatchback

In comparison to the current PH-spec Wigo, the new model is larger in most areas, with the dimensions seeing a 100 mm and 65 mm increase in length and width, respectively. It also comes with a bigger grille reminiscent of the one in the Avanza, as well as an option for larger 15-inch alloy wheels.

There are two engines found in global markets, namely a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder and a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine. If Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) wishes to carry over the power unit, we should get the smaller engine, which makes 67 horsepower and 91 Nm of torque.

What’s new in the powertrain department is the dual-mode CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which replaces the 4-speed automatic gearbox. It is offered alongside a 5-speed manual transmission for lower-end variants.

Again, these are just specifications from our neighbors so we still have to wait for TMP’s official announcement. If the all-new Wigo is indeed bound for a Philippine debut, it will be its first-ever model change since it arrived back in 2014.
