Subaru PH will deliver a one-two punch with its rally-derived WRX.

Nine months after making its global debut, the all-new Subaru WRX will be arriving in the Philippines. The second-generation model is scheduled to make its local debut by June 2022, in both sedan and wagon body styles.

The latest WRX will hit our shores in June, bringing sedan and wagon body styles

This was confirmed by Motor Image Pilipinas, the authorized distributor of Subaru vehicles in our market. Subaru PH said that the all-new WRX sedan and wagon will debut on June 8.

The latest iteration of the WRX sedan comes practically three decades after the model made its first appearance at the World Rally Championship in 1992. Underpinning the new WRX for the first time is the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) which premiered on the Impreza in 2016.

Subaru claims that the new WRX benefits from the SGP’s lower center of gravity, improving the vehicle’s agility and crash avoidance. The use of high-tensile steel allows for a 40-percent increase in impact energy absorption, with enhanced noise and vibration control as well as comfort.

The current WRX generation will no longer have the STI variant

In overseas markets, the all-new WRX comes with a new range-topping GT trim equipped with the latest Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) boasting a 50-percent reduction in shift times. But those hoping for a manual gearbox from the STI version are bound to be disappointed, with Subaru announcing that the WRX will be leaving the high-performance variant behind along with the previous Impreza-based platform.

However, the automaker clarified that only the gasoline-powered version is dead, with efforts now underway to explore other avenues for the WRX STI nameplate, including electrification.

Subaru says that the Philippine-spec WRX wagon will have the 2.4-liter turbo boxer engine under the hood

Meanwhile, the WRX wagon is a new addition to the lineup, also known as the second-generation Subaru Levorg in Japan. The model is also slated to debut in the second quarter of the year in Australia as the WRX Sportswagon.

The two-box variant will likely be marketed as the more family-oriented version, although it is expected to be no slouch either, with Subaru PH confirming that it will run on the same 2.4-liter turbo boxer engine used by the WRX sedan.

Other details such as specs and pricing information will likely be revealed as the launch date approaches, so stay tuned for updates at Philkotse.com.
