Toyota, together with Subaru, unveiled the all-new GR 86. It still shares a platform and powertrain with the Subaru BRZ, but Toyota has shown us that it does have some exterior features that make it different.

Another point that we were surprised by however, is the fact that the automatic transmission variants of the all-new 86 will come with the current version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist technology. That means it has pre-collision safety technologies, secondary collision avoidance support, and an emergency rescue support system.
Remember that Toyota currently has its own Toyota Safety Sense driver-assist tech, which is roughly equal to the Subaru EyeSight. So, why opt for the EyeSight instead of the in-house driver-assist tech?
Well, the reason for this might have been decided upon in order to streamline manufacturing. Also, there’s the point that Subaru and Toyota have this business and capital alliance, which was signed back in September 2019. Under this agreement, these two Japanese brands are committed to working together in order to make better cars.

Moreover, Subaru officially joined the Toyota group last year. There’s also the fact that Toyota has a 20 percent stake in Subaru.
Back to the all-new GR 86, the new naturally aspirated, boxer-four 2.4-liter engine uses Toyota’s D-4S direct fuel injection and port injection system. In the case of the Toyota GR 86, it can make 232 horsepower. That’s four more horses than the new Subaru BRZ.
For the exterior though, both Toyota and Subaru have strived to imbue their new respective sports car models, with their own unique style. The interior and on-board tech however, are largely identical.

With the unveiling of the all-new Toyota GR 86, it joins the GR Supra, and the GR Yaris as the third model under the Toyota Gazoo Racing nameplate. Furthermore, we are also excited for the future of the Toyota-Subaru business and capital alliance. Maybe these two marques can cook up another Toyobaru model in the future?
