In the local sedan market, the Hyundai Accent is regarded as a top contender in terms of fuel efficiency. What makes the Accent unique over other subcompact sedans in the country is its use of a diesel engine. With that, one can say that Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) is prioritizing fuel efficiency for its sedan entry.
Hyundai Accent
The Korean marque is currently not lending out test units as Hyundai’s local distributorship is reportedly undergoing a transition. As such, we based the following Hyundai Accent fuel consumption numbers on various sources that we can find online. Take note that the numbers can still vary depending on how you use the unit.
Hyundai Accent fuel consumption: City Driving
In terms of city driving, the Hyundai Accent managed to register around 9 to 13 km/l with its diesel engine. This is a 1.6-liter CRDi VGT (diesel) engine that is capable of generating 126 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. It‘s mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Some even claim that their Hyundai Accent’s fuel consumption registered at around 16 km/l in the city. It is possible under certain situations, such as the number of passengers and the weight of the cargo. The less the vehicle is carrying, the higher fuel efficiency number it returns, so try to leave unnecessary items at home.
The Accent is known for its fuel efficiency
Considering that city driving involves a lot of crawling especially on congested roads such as EDSA, the low-end torque delivery diesel engines can give is an advantage you can benefit from for driving an Accent. One of the disadvantages you have to keep in mind is that this type of engine is generally is more expensive to maintain. As such, always try to follow its prescribed maintenance routines.
As for the 1.4-liter Kappa MPI Dual CVVT (gasoline) engine, it returned around 11 km/l. This is available on the lower-end variants of the PH-spec Hyundai Accent. For specifics, the said engine is capable of generating 99 horsepower and 132 Nm of torque. It can be paired with either of the said transmission as well.

Hyundai Accent fuel consumption: Highway Driving
Highway driving is where the fuel-efficient characteristic of the Hyundai Accent got its reputation in the Philippines. With the diesel powertrain, the subcompact sedan is capable of achieving 20 to 23 km/l. Surprisingly, you will even find some that claim getting around 29 km/l as the Accent CRDi’s fuel consumption.
Along the good fuel efficiency is the Accent's sharp-looking exterior
If you have the Accent with a manual transmission, we recommend keeping the revs low as possible when driving on the highway to maximize fuel efficiency. To do just that, try to keep the transmission at the highest possible gear as vehicle speed allows. It means that the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the wheels rolling.
Meanwhile, the Kappa engine got to up to 21 km/l on the highway. In comparison to other subcompact sedan rivals such as the Honda City which registered 20.6 km/l on our test, the gas variant of the Accent still delivers respectable fuel economy. That said, you can drive out of towns without worrying much about fuel.
Hyundai Accent fuel consumption: Verdict
With all that being said, the Hyundai Accent’s fuel consumption is still one of the best in the Philippines despite not receiving major updates in recent times. The Accent with the CRDi engine might be your go-to option if you want to save a bit more on gas money.
As of this writing, diesel is more expensive than gasoline due to the soaring crude oil prices in the global market. We recommend that you monitor the trend first before choosing whether to get the CRDi or the Kappa engine of the Korean sedan. With this, you can make the most out of your car purchase.
