Toyota Vios fuel consumption: How efficient is this subcompact sedan?

If you’re getting a sedan, then it is highly likely that you are considering the Toyota Vios. For most who do, choosing a sedan is also rooted in the fact that they are reputedly fuel-efficient. This is on top of the fact that sedans are typically smaller than SUVs, many crossovers, MPVs, and pickup trucks, so they’re easier to park.

So, how is the Toyota Vios’ fuel consumption? Let us share what we’ve found when we drove the 2021 Toyota Vios G. 

Toyota Vios: Relevant specs 

Before listing off fuel consumption numbers, do note that the Toyota Vios’ fuel tank capacity is at 42 liters. That’s roughly the average when compared to other subcompact sedans in the local market. 

To put that into perspective, the Nissan Almera has 35 liters of fuel capacity. In turn, the Mitsubishi Mirage has 42 liters, the Honda City has 40 liters, the Hyundai Accent 1.6-liter trims have 45 liters while the Mazda3 has 52 liters.

Like most sedans in its segment, the Toyota Vios’ fuel type is of course gasoline. Its manufacturer recommends 93 octane gasoline at the minimum.  

As mentioned, the Vios variant we got to test is the Vios G 1.5 CVT. It uses the 1.5-liter 2NR-FE Dual VVT-i inline-4 gasoline engine. The said engine is capable of making up to 106 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to its front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. 

The Vios G also has a curb weight of 1,075 kg. During testing, two there were also two occupants aboard the vehicle. 

Toyota Vios: Fairly efficient 

On the highway, specifically the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the Vios G we tested managed to return 19.9 km/L while traveling at an average speed of 90 km/h.  

For mixed driving conditions (city and highway), the Toyota-made subcompact sedan clocked in 12.2 km/L.  

Compared to other sedans with inline-4 engines we’ve tested so far, we can say that those figures are fairly efficient. 

Of note, the Vios G comes standard with a set of 16-inch wheels wrapped 195/60 tires.

Of course, we can surmise that the lighter 1.3-liter Vios trims could return even better figures. After all, those variants come with a smaller engine, and are typically lighter compared to the 1.5-liter versions.  

At the moment however, we cannot provide actual fuel efficiency numbers for the 1.3-liter Vios trims as we are yet to give them a thorough test drive.
