Subaru delivered on its promise as it is exhibiting the Impreza STI at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) in Japan.
Subaru Impreza STI prototype
It was in December 2022 when Subaru announced that the Impreza STI will join its 2023 TAS lineup. To recall, the Japanese automaker said that the model will be a prototype fitted with STI (Subaru Tecnica International) parts.
And yes, the exhibited model is not a production-ready model. It is based on the all-new Subaru Impreza that was launched at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show. Much like any other STI models, Subaru’s performance division has showcased a sportier-looking hatchback at the auto show.
The Impreza STI looks more aggressive
A set of black alloy wheels is fitted to the side, complemented by side skirts for a sportier side profile. The front fascia received a glossy bumper lip, which should theoretically reduce airflow under the vehicle at high-speed runs.
As for the rear end, the model is fitted with a roof-mounted STI-branded spoiler, giving a hot hatch appearance. Lastly, a dual exhaust setup is equipped, which is mounted in the center.
It comes with STI-exclusive bits
No powertrain details were specified at the 2023 TAS. But in the U.S. market where the current sixth-gen model made its debut, the Impreza is available with two engines, namely 2.0-liter boxer-4 and 2.5-liter boxer-4 engines.
It is important to note that the Impreza STI prototype is said to be showcased as a “specially customized model, with STI parts in development equipped.”
The latest STI magic
During the launch of the next-gen Impreza, Subaru confirmed that it will offer the model to global markets. But as of this writing, one can only hope that the Impreza will be offered an STI badge.
The Subaru Impreza STI prototype is joined by other Subaru vehicles at the auto show including the Levorg STI Sport prototype, Crosstrek Boost Gear Concept, Rex Boost Gear Concept, and WRX Rally Challenge 2023.
