It’s the narrower version of the CX-50.

Just a few days after the debut of the CX-50 for the US market, it looks like another upcoming Mazda model has been spotted in the wild.

This time, it’s the CX-60, and it was caught on video in Japan where the marque was taking it out for a photo/video shoot on public roads. However, the said video is now not available. Maybe Mazda asked the owner of the video to take it down? We can’t exactly tell.

Good thing though, we were able to take screenshots of the reportedly Mazda CX-60 before the video was taken down. The Mazda CX-60 wasn’t disguised at all, and from what we could see on the video …err screenshots, it’s pretty much the narrower version of the CX-50. This characteristic of the crossover in question can be clearly seen from its front, which bears a taller-looking grille compared to the CX-50.

From the side though, it appears that the CX-60 doesn’t have the outdoorsy feel of the CX-50 as it doesn’t have black plastic cladding. It also doesn’t have roof rails, and it even has some bits of chrome accents all around.

The video that was uploaded also showed another Mazda model. But while we could clearly see that the white one is indeed the CX-60, we aren’t sure as to what model the second, red-colored one is. However, we suspect that this might be another variant.

For now, there are no details regarding the  CX-60’s mechanical specs and on-board features. We are fairly certain though that it is one of several upcoming rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive models from Mazda. It will be using a whole new architecture, and these will be built in Japan.

So, where does the CX-60 fit into the Mazda lineup? Well, the Japanese automaker is planning to extensively expand and revamp its model lineup soon. These products can then be broken down into two main groups: the Large Product group, and the Small Product Group.

A closer look at the CX-60's front end

The Large Product Group consists of two-row and three-row models. So that’s the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90. The CX-70 and CX-90 will be introduced in North American and other markets where buyers prefer wider and larger vehicles.

Meanwhile, the CX-60 and the three-row CX-80 will be launched in places like Japan and Europe where the market favors more compact vehicles.

The Small Product Group then consists of the Mazda3 and the CX-30. There was no mention about the Mazda2 and Mazda CX-3, so the marque might have other plans for those models.

So, what does this mean for the Philippine market? Well, for now, it’s too early to tell. The Mazda product plan mentioned above is a global plan, and Mazda Philippines might have other ideas on the specific models it’ll bring in in the near future.

Do remember though, Filipinos, despite constantly dealing with narrow in-city roads and two-lane provincial highways, still like big crossovers and SUVs.
