We might see the “carmageddon” earlier than expected.

Starting 11 p.m. on November 5 until 5 a.m. on November 8, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be conducting construction works on EDSA.

The official Facebook post from DPWH

Specifically, the said agency will be reblocking the second northbound lane of EDSA, located before Annapolis to the Boni Serrano Flyover in Quezon City. The DPWH will also be doing the same on the EDSA-Tramo flyover in Pasay City.

To this end, the DPWH is urging motorists to take alternate routes to avoid these construction zones on EDSA.

Of note, the MMDA has been reporting that the traffic levels on EDSA are now almost at pre-pandemic levels. There’s also the fact that current COVID-19 restrictions have already been downgraded and are less strict.

More businesses and offices have since reopened, and thus more people have been out and about in recent months. As such, we could expect even more congestion on EDSA in the coming days due to the construction.

Beyond that, we reckon that smaller city roads connected to EDSA in some way might become affected by higher than usual traffic volume during the span of DPWH construction works.

Hopefully, many will be made aware of DPWH's upcoming construction on EDSA

Do remember also that the NCR Mayors have already decided to lift the curfew to extend mall operating hours from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Previously, Metro Manila had a 12 midnight to 4 a.m. curfew. According to the MMDA, this will allow mall goers and mall employees ample time to go home.

It’s been a day since the lifting of the curfew, and so we still do not have a bigger picture of how it affects traffic. In connection to the construction works though, it might negatively affect traffic flow especially in areas of EDSA.

The said thoroughfare afterall, snakes through Metro Manila. As such, areas of EDSA that are adjacent to malls, even those that aren’t in the vicinity of the construction areas, might feel more traffic than usual.
