Toyota Innova, Hilux are latest addition to PNP fleet

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recently acquired several new vehicles. These are a part of its logistical enhancement program and are set on providing police officers more mobility. This in turn, will allow for the needed police visibility in many parts of the country.

In total, the recent acquisition numbers at 11. These consist of three Toyota Innova units, which were designated as “light transport vehicles”. The other eight are personnel carriers, which come in the form of Toyota Hilux units with an “FX-type” rear cab.  

Of note, all of these are now equipped with the proper patrol lights typical of a proper police car. But apart from that, those Hilux units are actually Conquest variants equipped with a 4x4 drivetrain. These even come with a winch. 

In total, the acquisition cost for these vehicles tallied up to Php 35.3 million. And according to PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., the said fund is a portion of the increased budget allocated for fiscal year 2021. 

The said 4x4 personnel carriers will then be sent to eight municipal stations, all of which are located in the Aurora province. Specifically, they will be allocated to Baler, Casiguran, Dipaculao, Dingalan, Dilasag, Dinalungan, Maria Aurora, and San Luis.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Innova units are for the PNP Training Institute at Calamba City, Laguna, as well as the PNP Academy Silang, Cavite.  

Of note, the Toyota Hilux for the Philippine market has a price ranging from Php 843,000 to Php 1,985,000. That range takes into account the fleet variants, as well as the top-spec Hilux GR Sport.  

Meanwhile, the Toyota Innova currently starts at Php 1,186,000 for the entry-level J variant. The top-spec model of the Innova meanwhile, the V variant, can be had for Php 1,759,000.

The Toyota Hilux 2024 is a midsize pickup offered in the local market as both fleet and regular units. It is also available in two turbodiesel engine options and four gearbox choices, accompanied by eight exterior colors. Dimensions start at 5,285mm in height, 1,800mm in width, and 1,700mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,085mm. Among the rivals to the Toyota Hilux in the market are the Mitsubishi Strada, Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, and the Isuzu D-Max.

This popular pickup continues to evolve and slowly move upmarket after gaining luxuries. The most significant revolutionary jump of the Hilux happened in 2004 when the seventh generation of the model was introduced. It was the first 21st-century iteration of Toyota's pickup. It is also the first generation to ride on Toyota’s new Innovative Multi-purpose Vehicle architecture. It provided improved safety, better ride comfort, modern D-4D diesel engines, more interior space, and a more modern aerodynamic body.

The current 8th generation offers a more refined and stylish design than its predecessor, but the tradition of being a tough pickup continues. It received a much-awaited refresh in 2020.
