Here's why a car is one of the best college graduation gifts. Also, here are some recommended models.

Top five cars suitable as graduation gifts

With summer just around the corner, numerous lads and gals are preparing for one of the most anticipated events in their young lives; graduating from college.

It is after all that momentous occasion when a young person is now capable of entering the workforce and will become a contributor to society.

Heck, some of this young uns might even become future Philippine leaders, entrepreneurs, and one day. People who are catalysts of change.

As such, many parents will become ecstatic with joy whenever their kid/kids finally make it through college.

And of course, many will buy their budding young professionals with gifts like new clothes, a new watch, jewelry, and of course…. a car.

Cars as graduation gifts: why?

While this might be more of an American thing because cars there are cheaper, after all, many Filipino parents are beginning to see the positives that can be brought about by giving their new college graduates a car.

For starters, it enables a new graduate to be more mobile which is indispensable when looking for a job here in the Philippines.

This goes both for the province and for the ones living in large cities like Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao. Personal mobility nowadays is paramount!

Like owning pets, a car will also teach a young person responsibility and discipline. He/she will learn how to maintain it, to keep it clean and do other fun things associated with owning a car.

There’s also the issue of getting a driver’s license which can be thought of as a practical introduction to going about Philippine Government processes.

Then there’s the act of driving in the Philippines itself which many will agree is the greatest test of patience, discipline, and grit.

So, this begs the question, what kind of car is suitable for a young, recently graduated driver?

1. It should be reliable

Even when buying a used car, one quality that parents should be concerned about is the model’s reliability. That’s because we can assume that many of these young people will know next to nothing about fixing cars.

As such, a reliable model might ease the practice of car maintenance and amateur repair into them without discouraging and/or scaring them too much.

2. Fuel-efficient

Young college graduates who are looking for a job will need the money and a lot of it. Guess where that will come from.

3. Safety

Safety features are a must-have regardless of whether it’s a family car, a gift for your young college graduate, or as a toy.

Worry not though because most modern cars available in the Philippines today do rate higher than their counterparts back in the ’90s, the time you yourself graduated college.

The Toyota Vios today has become what the Corolla was back in the ’90s; reliable, cheap, fuel-efficient, plentiful, and the new models, specifically the “Prime” variants are particularly safe rides with dual front, side, curtain, and knee airbags.

Latest review Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback 2020 Review

Like the Vios, the Mitsubishi Mirage, regardless of whether it’s the sedan G4 version or the hatchback, is affordable and reliable.

However, unlike the Vios, the Mirage uses an inline-3 engine (the Vios has an inline-4) that has a lower 1.2-liter displacement which returns better fuel mileage.

This is advantageous to you, the parent, because where do you think a fresh college grad will get his/her gas money?

While being brand spanking new to the market, the Suzuki S-Presso is a prime candidate as a gift for your fresh college grad on the job hunt due to its very efficient three-cylinder, it’s very cheap suggested retail price and its reliability.

We can say that the last part in confidence because the Suzuki S-Presso is actually based on the very reliable Suzuki Celerio.

We're pretty excited about this one folk!

The sole S-Presso variant for the Philippines however only comes with one transmission option; a 5-speed manual. And know these Gen-Z young-uns, most of them can’t drive stick.

On the flip side, however, gifting an S-Presso to a young person and then teaching him/her to drive stick is a contribution to the “save the manuals” movement.

While a bit barebones in terms of amenities, the Reina/Soluto are very affordable cars with decent soundproofing and with a decent safety kit.
They’re also more compact than the Vios and the Mirage as such, they might be ideal as learner cars especially on the tight streets of Metro Manila. These two have decent trunk space too.

Latest review Honda Brio 2018 Philippines review

While still very new in the Philippine car market, the Honda Brio has made waves for the value it provides whilst keeping the retail price on the down-low.

It is, after all, a small hatchback. Despite that though, the Brio is certainly much more powerful than its competitors like the Wigo and the Mirage hatch due to its inline-4 VTEC engine.
