BMW confirmed that it is preparing another combustion engine lineup consisting of new gasoline and diesel powertrains. This announcement might come as a surprise to some, considering the fast-growing global electric vehicle (EV) push among auto manufacturers, including fellow Euro car brand Volkswagen.
BMW Development Director Frank Weber
In a report by Auto Motor und Sport, BMW Development Director Frank Weber shared the brand’s strategy that involves the development of internal combustion engines (ICEs). He explained the importance of the new engine lineup as it will be essential in bridging technology towards a future of all-electric models.
“One thing is certain for us, we still need the state-of-the-art combustion engine for a few years to effectively reduce CO2 emissions in the passenger car sector globally. That’s why we’re working on a new generation of engines: petrol, diesel, six-cylinder, eight-cylinder,” said BMW Development Director Frank Weber.
The brand is not letting go of combustion engines just yet
The new BMW engines are said to be future-proof for coming emission standards. This strategy is guided by the fact that the legislation of emissions is becoming standardized globally. BMW has disclosed no further details regarding the upcoming engines, but Weber noted that the six-cylinder engine is poised to provide better fuel efficiency and cleaner emissions.
Despite developing new ICEs, the German marque is not slacking off in the electrification race. One of the latest EV products the brand showcased is the BMW iX M60 which is expected to generate 619 horsepower and 1,100 Nm of torque. It is also projected to offer a 566-km range and a zero to 100 km/h acceleration time of 3.8 seconds.
Weber acknowledges that the future of the automotive industry is electric. But he believes that forcing electrification in BMW’s lineup will only do more damage especially for its customers. As such, the brand will still continue developing ICEs to grow its business network and meet market demands.
