Geely's newest subcompact sedan contender comes in two flavors.

Geely Philippines has brought in the fourth product in its lineup. This is the Emgrand subcompact sedan, the Chinese automaker’s first-ever three-box model in our market.

The Emgrand is the first sedan in the Geely Philippines lineup

The Emgrand nameplate was originally a Geely sub-brand launched in 2009, along with the Englon and Gleagle. It spawned five production models and four concept vehicles, selling over 200,000 units to Chinese customers in 2013. Geely discontinued the brand a year later, appropriating the name for one of its offerings in the mainland.

Now on its fourth generation, the Emgrand is set to take the fight to the subcompact sedan segment’s contenders such as the Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Nissan Almera. Geely’s sedan model comes in three variants. These are the Emgrand S 1.5 MT, the Emgrand Comfort 1.5 CVT, and the Emgrand 1.5 CVT. We’ll take a look at each one to see which meets your preferences.

Geely Emgrand Variants: Exterior

Standard on Geely Emgrand trims are dimensions spanning 4,638mm in length, 1,822mm in width, and 1,460mm in height on a 2,650mm wheelbase. A 122mm gap exists between the car’s underchassis and the road, one of the lowest ground clearances in its class next to the MG 5.

The model’s Comfort and Premium trims share projector LED headlamps on the fascia, featuring automatic controls. The Emgrand S meanwhile is equipped with projector halogen headlamps, but all three trims do come with LED daytime running lamps.

In contrast with the rest of Geely’s Philippine lineup, the Emgrand eschews the Expanding Cosmos grille for a more stylish version consisting of alternating black and chrome vertical slats.

The entry level S, Comfort and Premium variants feature power-folding side mirrors, but only the Premium offers power-folding and defrosting capabilities.

The LED taillamps span the width of the car, crossing the wide trunk which has a hands-free release feature on the top-spec variant. Aluminum alloy wheels measuring 17 inches in diameter are present on the Comfort and Premium. In turn, the entry-level Emgrand S rides on a smaller set of 15-inch alloy wheels.

Geely Emgrand Variants: Interior

Up to five occupants can fit in the Emgrand’s cabin, which is decked out in basic black fabric for the entry-level S and Comfort trim, or a flashier white-and-blue leatherette and suede material on the Premium. The S and Comfort variants both have 6-way manual adjustment for the driver’s seat, upgraded to power adjustment for the higher-spec version.

Electronic airconditioning with Intelligent Interactive System and rear vents is standard, with the Premium trim equipped with a sunroof for letting in more ambient light. Both Comfort and Premium remove the manual parking brake lever in favor of an electric parking brake with auto hold. Meanwhile, the Emgrand S uses a simpler, hand-operated parking brake.

The instrumentation on the entry-level S and Comfort variants comprises analog gauges with a 3.5-inch multi-information display, replaced by a 12.3-inch digital cluster on the Premium. All trims offer an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless screen mirroring, patched to four speakers on the Comfort and six speakers on the Premium.

Geely Emgrand Variants: Engine & Performance

The power unit of choice on the Geely Emgrand is a 1.5-liter 16-valve DOHC gasoline engine with dual continuous variable valve timing, rated at 102 horsepower and 142 Nm of torque. Three drive modes are on offer including Eco, Comfort, and Sport.

This Euro VI b-compliant motor is partnered with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with 8-speed Tiptronic manual mode for the Comfort and Premium. The Emgrand S on the otherhand, uses a five-speed manual gearbox. MacPherson front struts and a rear torsion beam are standard, as well as front ventilated discs and rear solid discs for brakes.

Geely Emgrand Variants: Safety

The Emgrand Comfort and the Emgrand S are both fitted with dual front airbags, to which the Premium adds side and curtain units. Apart from anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, other standard features are traction and stability control, hill start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Speed-sensing central locking is also available for the Emgrand, but this is exclusive to the top-spec trim.

Both the Comfort and Premium variants also come with a rear camera, reverse parking sensors, and cruise control. These aforementioned features are absent on the Emgrand S.

Geely Emgrand Variants: Pricing

 2022 Geely Emgrand variants   Price
Geely Emgrand S 1.5 Php 735,000
Geely Emgrand Comfort 1.5 Php 945,000
Geely Emgrand Premium 1.5 Php 999,000

Geely Emgrand Variants: Conclusion

The 2022 Geely Emgrand in Comfort trim already presents formidable value, with an array of features that are veritable steals within its price point including LED headlamps, folding rear seats, and a touchscreen head unit. Although its higher-spec Premium variant comes with a sunroof and digital instrument cluster, buyers might find the interior color scheme a little off-putting.

Where the flagship trim has an edge is in safety by having more airbags, although these might do little to justify the difference of more than Php 100,000. Still, the Premium variant could have its own following who might spend for completeness’ sake. Otherwise, the Comfort trim is more than enough.

But while the Comfort sits as the goldilocks spot in the Emgrand's variant lineup, the Emgrand S comes at an even lower price point. It does however, have some noticeable compromises features-wise, and it also uses a manual gearbox. Then again, it also shares the same crucial bits with its higher spec counterparts namely the engine and infotainment system. So if what you're after is the most affordable Emgrand, the entry-level S trim might float your boat.
