2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer debuts – Same name, totally different car

The nameplate is now worn by a smaller yet more tech-savvy model in the Philippines.

For nearly a decade, the second-generation Chevrolet Trailblazer existed in our market as a midsize truck-based 7-seater SUV, complete with a ladder-frame chassis and four-wheel-drive capability. It was quietly dropped from the local lineup this year, and now, Chevrolet Philippines brings back the Trailblazer as a smaller yet more tech-savvy compact crossover.

The All-New 2022 Chevy Trailblazer

The new model made its global debut at the 2019 Auto Shanghai exhibition alongside the Tracker subcompact crossover, with both vehicles sporting Chevrolet’s latest aesthetic. “We are proud to introduce the all-new 2022 Chevy Trailblazer to the Philippine market,” said Chevrolet Philippines President & CEO Atty. Albert Arcilla. “The Trailblazer is a continuation of the new design language for Chevy’s crossover family and extends our momentum into one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.”

Exterior

Smaller proportions are the most evident change that the new Trailblazer brings over the outgoing model, with the former now underpinned by a global GM Vehicle Set Strategy (VSS) platform. The chiseled fascia is inspired by the Camaro, featuring a pair of Intellibeam LED headlamps accompanied by LED fog lamps and DRLs flanking the dual-port grille.

Adopting a bolder shape, the hood conveys a youthful air. One notable feature is the generous amount of body cladding around the vehicle, complementing the simulated skid plate to lend a sporty character. Prominent character lines define the profile, while roof rails accompany the sleek outline. LED tail lamps and a high-mount stop lamp surround the liftgate which now features hands-free power operation. Alloy wheels measuring 17 inches are standard on all four corners.

Interior

Inside, the 2022 Trailblazer has been downsized in terms of passenger capacity yet makes up for it with a plethora of interior amenities. There’s room for five occupants on jet-black leather seats with white contrast stitching, while the steering wheel and front seats feature a heating function.

The second-row bench can be split-fold 60/40 to access a cargo area that features a two-tier cargo floor. Comfort won’t be in short supply even during harsh conditions outside with the automatic climate control system featuring an air moisture sensor to regulate humidity and cabin filter to keep allergens out.

Tech & safety

The new Trailblazer comes with a 3.5-inch monochrome screen placed between large analog gauges on the instrument panel just beyond the multi-function steering wheel. An 8-inch MyLink infotainment touchscreen is embedded on the dashboard, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Waking the engine is as easy as pressing the starter button, while the rear-view mirror automatically dims to reduce glare during night drives.

A total of six airbags are standard on the 2022 Trailblazer, complemented by 3-point ELR seatbelts for all passengers. Anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, hill start assist, and engine drag control are standard. Brake assist systems with torque vectoring are also present.

The new Trailblazer, ace-in-the-hole is the suite of advanced driver-assist features including Forward Collision Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Rear Park Assist using the rear camera and sensors.

Engine & drivetrain

Foregoing the old diesel mill, the 2022 Trailblazer now runs on a 1.3-liter GM E-Turbo gasoline engine made from lightweight aluminum. Its three cylinders are actuated by a chain drive, generating 155 horsepower and 236 Nm of torque, while an active thermal management system utilizes various sensors to keep the engine within optimal temperatures.

The compact crossover ditches diesel power for a smaller 1.3-liter gasoline turbo

Power is diverted to the front wheels through a new-generation 6-speed continuously variable transmission. An active grille shutter system automatically closes on highway speeds to reduce drag and maximize aerodynamic efficiency, while an available engine start-stop system reduces emissions and improves fuel economy.
