What’s new with the 2020 Subaru WRX?

Updated Mar 24, 2020 | Same topic: Automotive Industry Updates

Take a look at what the 2020 Subaru WRX can offer you.

Subaru is currently busy updating its entire lineup and recently, the Japanese carmaker unveiled the new Impreza. The next-generation WRX however, is still yet to be released. So what about the current WRX model available here in the Philippines?

Well, Subaru actually gave the 2020 Subaru WRX a few updates as it is one of their strong sellers after all.

2020 Subaru WRX: Exterior Design

When it comes to looks, the Subaru performance sedan remains largely the same. It still features that iconic, functional hood scoop, which feeds air into the engine, and the sharp C-shaped daytime running lamps.

All in all, the front is still that recognizably aggressive face, while the sides and the rear still exhibit Subaru’s very rakish take on the sedan silhouette.

The large hood scoop has become the signature of the WRX and the WRX STI

In terms of size, the WRX is just in the sweet spot especially when city driving is concerned. You’re still visible to drivers around you on the road, while it isn’t a boat of a sedan. It’s a compact car after all.

2020 Subaru WRX: New Tech

What’s new to the 2020 Subaru WRX is the EyeSight safety suite. What comes aboard the 2020 WRX, however, is an updated 3.0 version, and it has some pretty neat features.

For starters, it uses a set of stereo cameras to detect obstructions on the road as well as those within your blind spot. The system also includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane sway warning, and lane departure warning.

Specific to the 3.0 Eyesight, however, is the Eyesight Assist Monitor or EAM, which comes in the form of LEDs on the windshield serving as visual cues for the driver whenever one of the many functions of the Eyesight system activates.

The interior remains to be a comfortable and well-arranged space you'd want to be in

The 3.0 Eyesight, together with the passive safety features, makes the 2020 Subaru WRX one of the safest, performance-oriented sedans in the Philippine market right now.

Note however that the CVT variant of WRX comes with the EyeSight safety suite, while the manual version does not.

2020 Subaru WRX: The same exciting performance

The currently available 2020 Subaru WRX is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 Liter Boxer-4 engine. It makes a maximum of 268 horsepower @ 5,600 RPM and 350 Nm of torque @ 5,200 RPM.

Being a Subaru, both available variants of the WRX come with the proprietary symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. And in talking about variants, there’s a 6-speed manual and a CVT.

Despite the aggressive front end, the sides and the rear of the WRX actually looks sleek

Although the CVT does come with the EyeSight, the 6-speed is still the one to get if you’re into driver feedback, and if you’re planning to do fun things driving a WRX. But then again, there’s always a more powerful WRX STI if you want real fun.

The all-new Subaru WRX debuted for the Philippine market in June 2022 as a 2023 model. It was introduced along with the wagon version. Currently, this model has two different variants. There’s the WRX 6MT and the WRX CVT EyeSight.

Subaru WRX Exterior

For exterior equipment, the all-new WRX gets a pair of LED headlamps with auto-leveling, LED front fog lamps, LED taillights, and power-folding side mirrors. The WRX MT and WRX CVT EyeSight then ride on a set of 18-inch Aluminum-alloy wheels.

All trims also come with sports side garnish, a trunk spoiler, and twin-dual tail mufflers. Only the top-spec WRX tS and the mid-spec WRX CVT may come with a power-sliding sunroof.

Subaru WRX Interior

The WRX can seat up to five. It then provides its occupants with fabric or suede seats, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear vents. It also comes with sport pedals, rain-sensing wipers, a leather steering wheel, a push-to-start button, etc.

Technology & Safety Features

For safety, the Subaru WRX’s higher-spec variants are equipped with the EyeSight driver assist suite. This includes autonomous emergency braking, lane centering control, adaptive steering control, and lane departure prevention, among other features.

The WRX also gets a hill-start assist, active torque vectoring, seven airbags, a reverse camera, a driver monitoring system, etc.

Platform & Chassis

The all-new WRX uses the Subaru Global Platform. It shares this with other Subaru Philippine models like the XV, the WRX Wagon, etc.

It then uses a MacPherson strut front suspension and a double-wishbone rear suspension. Disc brakes then handle braking for all four wheels.

Of note, the heaviest WRX variant is the top-spec WRX tS CVT EyeSight, which clocks in at 1,612kg. The lightest meanwhile is the WRX MT, which has a curb weight of 1,515kg.
