The Geely Coolray’s demand in the local market is not an isolated case as it has also been racking up sales in Malaysia albeit carrying a different car brand, and model name. To put things in perspective, the Coolray is sold in the Malaysian market as the Proton X50, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Chinese subcompact crossover.

Malaysian carmaker Proton offers the X50 as its challenger in the market’s overall SUV segment. The X50 competes in Malaysia’s B-segment SUV category, which is the equivalent of the subcompact crossover segment in the Philippines.

Proton reported that it has managed to sell 28,774 X50 units in 2021, making it the best-selling SUV overall in Malaysia. As such, it follows that the Proton X50 is also the reigning subcompact crossover in the Malaysian market. Proton added that the X50 posted its best-ever monthly sales last December with 4,310 units sold.

The Malaysian car brand ended 2021 with sales of 114,708 units, which is said to be its highest unit sales since 2014. It also translates to an increase of 4.5 percent over its 2020 sales.

Globally, Geely said that it has sold nearly 400,000 Coolray units. It was first launched in China last October 2018. Then, in September 2019, the Geely Coolray was introduced in the global market including the Philippines, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

In the Philippines, the Coolray has a 35 percent market share in the subcompact crossover segment. Geely PH shared that it was able to roll out 2,690 brand-new Coolray units as of November 2021.
