This new variant gets a front-wheel-drive layout with 204 horsepower.

BMW has unveiled the new entry-level variant of the iX1 range with the eDrive20. The new variant slots below the iX1 eDrive30, which comes with a dual-motor motor.

The BMW iX1 eDrive20 instead gets a single motor setup capable of generating 204 horsepower with a temporary boost and 250 Nm of torque. The electric motor is mounted at the front axle as opposed to the eDrive30 that boasts an all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration.

The all-electric subcompact crossover has a 170 km/h electronically-limited top speed and a zero to 100 km/h acceleration time of 8.6 seconds.

In terms of electric vehicle (EV) capabilities, the new iX1 uses the same 64.78 kWh battery. It can charge from zero to 100 percent in 6.5 hours using a standard AC charger. When using a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 29 minutes.

As for the range, the EV can run 430 km to 475 km on a single charge based on tests by the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

The BMW iX1 and the combustion-engined counterpart X1, which is available in the Philippines, come with a near-identical exterior design. But considering the former doesn’t need an engine cooling system, the all-electric subcompact crossover gets a closed-off grille design, similar to the one you would see on the iX.

Inside, the dashboard is mounted with a 10.7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The latter is equipped with the new BMW Operating System 9, enabling features such as faster updates for over-the-air functions, extended navigation, and personalization.

BMW's electric range continues to evolve

BMW said the production will commence in November 2023. The iX1 eDrive20 will be offered with a recommended retail price of 47,900 euros (around Php 2.923 million) in Europe.

It is still unclear whether BMW Philippines has plans to bring the new entry-level variant to the brand’s all-electric crossover lineup. For now, we have the bigger iX3 compact crossover sibling, which arrived in the country last January 2023.
