12 small crossovers you can buy under P1-million

In recent times, it’s pretty evident more people are shifting from sedans and hatchbacks to crossovers. Here in the Philippines, subcompact crossovers are even more popular. These cars after all are more maneuverable than midsize SUVs. There’s also the fact that these small crossovers usually have a high driving position that many people seem to like. Some models also have better ground clearance than most small hatchbacks and sedans.

The best part with these small crossovers nowadays though, is that they’ve become affordable. Some are even on par with hatchback and sedans when it comes to pricing.

That said, here’s a list of 12 small crossovers you can buy under Php 1-million in the Philippines.

1. MG ZS

Sold locally by Morris Garages Philippines, which operates under The Covenant Car Company Inc., the MG ZS is one of the more affordable subcompact crossovers in the country right now. Despite its price though, the MG ZS offers a roomy interior and an elegant looking exterior design.

All variants of the MG ZS are propelled by a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine capable of producing up to 112 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic.

Currently, the MG ZS has four variants with prices ranging from Php 818,888 to Php 998,888.

2. Chery Tiggo 2

Upon the re-entry of Chery Auto to the Philippine market, it introduced several new crossovers. One of which is the Chery Tiggo 2. On the outside, the Tiggo 2 is a modern-looking vehicle with the usual crossover silhouette. Inside, it is well-arranged, and it offers sufficient cargo and passenger space. It also comes with a new variant that features a two-tone exterior. 

The Tiggo 2’s sole engine option is a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline mill, which can be paired to a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The said engine has a maximum output of 106 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels.

The Tiggo 2 1.5 MT is currently priced at Php 695,000, while the Tiggo 2 1.5 AT is priced at Php 770,000, and the two-tone Tiggo 2 is priced at Php 785,000.

3. Chery Tiggo 5X

Launched along with the Tiggo 2, the Chery Tiggo 5X is another small crossover offered by Chery PH. Unlike the former however, the Tiggo 5X has more features. Its top-of-the-line variant comes with an electronic parking brake, LED headlamps, a larger set of 17-inch alloy wheels, etc.

Under the Tiggo 5X’s hood is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that can produce up to 114 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Having more features, the Tiggo 5Xis a bit pricier than the Tiggo 2. Its current price starts at Php 818,000 for the entry-level manual variant, while the top variant sits at Php 950,000.

4. Kia Stonic

Launched locally in October 2020, the Kia Stonic is the Korean brand’s entry to the ever-competitive subcompact crossover segment. Its price range starts from Php 735,000 to Php 925,000. As such, it is priced competitively.

The Stonic’s engine is a 1.4-liter inline-4 engine, which can make up to 97 horsepower and 132 Nm of torque. It also has two transmissions available. The entry-level variant has a five-speed manual, while the mid and top variants come with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Inside, the Kia Stonic has a cargo capacity of 325-liters with the rear seats up. The Kia branded crossover also comes standard with a six-piece audio system, USB ports, charging ports, a reverse camera, and an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

5. Hyundai Venue

Hyundai introduced the Venue weeks after the Stonic was launched in the local market. It’s the Korean carmaker’s smallest crossover to date. Despite that, it features Hyundai’s most recent design language giving it a bold, futuristic look.

To keep its five occupants comfortable and entertained, the Venue is equipped with automatic climate control and an eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Default cargo space is also decent at 420-liters.

The heart of the Hyundai Venue is a 1.6-liter inline-4 gasoline engine. The said engine is good for 121 horsepower and 151 Nm of torque. Like most subcompact crossovers on this list, the Venue is a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

The Venue only has two variants and both come with a six-speed automatic transmission. The entry-level variant is priced at Php 915,000, and the top-of-the-line variant can be had for Php 985,000.

6. Geely Coolray

Another bold looking subcompact crossover on this list is the Geely Coolray. It features sharp angles all-around, as well as its brand’s signature “Expanding Cosmos” grille. The noteworthy looks of the Coolray however extend to its futuristic-looking interior. The best part of all is most surfaces inside, even for the entry-level variant, are soft to the touch.

Noteworthy features on the Coolray’s entry-level variant include a 10-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, a reverse camera, 12-volt outlets, and a digital gauge cluster. The Coolray is also one of the few vehicles in this class that comes with a tilt and telescopic steering wheel.

Standard for the Coolray is a 1.5-liter Inline-3 turbocharged gasoline engine. On all variants, this inline-3 can produce up to 177 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque making the Coolray one of the more powerful vehicles in its class.

Power is sent to the front wheels via the Coolray’s dual-clutch automatic tranny. The said transmission also has a manual mode that can be controlled by paddle shifters.

Currently, the Coolray Comfort 1.5 DCT is priced at Php 978,000. It’s the only Coolray variant with a price-tag below Php 1-million.

7. Ford EcoSport

Introduced back in January 2014, the Ford EcoSport is definitely an industry veteran. In 2018 it had a whopping 50 percent market share for crossovers locally. That may have shrunk a bit currently as there are more choices now, but the Ford model is still a significant force in the market.

Currently, there are two EcoSport variants that you can buy under Php 1-million. The more affordable one is the EcoSport Trend 1.5 MT priced at Php 799,000. The other EcoSport Trend 1.5 AT variant is priced at Php 998,000.

Both of the said variants come with a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine, which can churn out 121 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque. Both are front-wheel-drive, and both use a five-speed automatic transmission.

8. GAC GS3

Sitting at Php 888,000 is the GAC GS3 GS 1.5 AT. As the variant name suggests, this crossover is powered by a 1.5-liter inline-4 mill that can churn out 113 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque. A six-speed automatic tranny then sends power to the front wheels.

Despite being an entry-level variant, the GS3 GS has parking sensors, hill-start assist, stability and traction control, and speed-sensing door locks.

9. JAC S1

The JAC S1 is probably the most affordable crossover in the Philippines today with a price tag of Php 585,000. It’s also one of the smallest entrants to the subcompact crossover market. Despite that, it’s got sporty looking two-tone color, and it features LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps.

Inside, it even comes with leather seats, a seven-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, a digital instrument cluster, and it can also fit five people.

The sole engine choice for the JAC S1 is a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine paired with a five-speed manual. Power is sent to the front wheels. With that configuration, the S1’s four-banger can make up to 99 horsepower and 99 Nm of torque.

10. JAC S2

Next up on the list is the JAC S2, which is a bit larger than the S1. It’s also a bit pricier than its smaller brother with the manual version sitting at a price of Php 720,000. The CVT variant on the other hand comes with a Php 770,000 price tag.

That said, it’s still an affordable car with a decent set of features. Inside you’ll find that it comes with a seven-inch touchscreen with Smartphone mirroring, parking sensors, 12-volt outlets, USB ports, a reverse camera, cruise control, a digital gauge cluster, and many other useful features.

Being larger than the S1, the S2 uses a slightly more powerful 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine that can produce up to 111 horsepower and 146 Nm of torque. The model in question uses a front-wheel-drive drivetrain and it either has a CVT or a five-speed manual transmission.

 11. JAC S3

Sitting top on JAC’s subcompact crossover totem-pole is the JAC S3. Unlike the other two JAC crossovers though, the S3 uses a slightly larger 1.6-liter engine that can churn out up to 116 horsepower and 155 Nm of torque. Available transmissions include a CVT, as well as a six-speed manual. It has a starting price of Php 890,000 for the MT variant while the CVT trim is priced at Php 940,000.

Just like the S2, The S3 comes with parking sensors, a digital cluster, a reverse camera, and cruise control. It does however have a larger 10-inch touchscreen, a power liftgate, and automatic headlamps.

12. Haima S5

Sold by Haima Philippines under the management of the Laus Auto Group, the Haima S5 is a small, well-equipped crossover that might be ideal as a daily driver. It’s got a decent default cargo space of 320-liters, and even its entry-level variants are equipped with leather seats, a seven-inch LCD, parking sensors, and stability control.

Propelling the S5 forward is a 1.6-liter gasoline mill that can produce up to 119 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque. 

There are only two variants of the S5 with a price below P1-Million. That’s the S5 Elite 1.6 priced at Php 879,000, and the Noble 1.6 MT Php 949,000. Both make use of a five-speed manual transmission.
