The all-new BMW X2 will be produced at the BMW Group Plant in Regensburg, with plans for a US market launch in March 2024. No words for whether the X1’s bigger subcompact crossover sibling will make a Philippine entry. For now, let’s check out what’s new with the upcoming second-generation model.

Exterior

Dimensions-wise, the next-gen X2 is 4,567mm long, 1,844mm in width, and 1,580mm in height. This makes it 193mm longer, 20.3mm wider, and 63.5mm taller than the predecessor. The wheelbase is also extended by 22.9mm to a total of 2,692mm. All these make up the couple-like silhouette of the model.

The X2 just got sportier

The brand’s signature kidney grille appears to be larger, flanked by new headlights with boomerang-like daytime running lights (DRLs) seen in other BMWs like the 3 Series. The taillights are likewise redesigned, complementing the distinctive sporty-looking silhouette. A set of 21-inch light alloys is offered on a compact BMW model for the first time.

An M sport package will be offered for an even sportier finish – similar to Toyota with the GR-S and Mercedes-Benz with the AMG Line. Some of which include large side air intakes, M-specific side skirts, M high-gloss Shadowline exterior, adaptive M suspension, and 19-inch M light alloy wheels.

Interior

Inside, we can tell the layout is borrowed from the BMW X1. With larger dimensions, BMW claims the cabin space has improved, allowing increased legroom in the second-row seats and luggage compartment. Like the entry-level crossover model, the X2 also hosts a driver-focused cockpit.

BMW has developed new seats for the X2 that offer a stylish appearance and optimized comfort even for long-distance trips. Further enhancing comfort is the use of lumbar support in the backrest including a massage function. Moreover, the seats come standard with animal-free perforated Veganza material.

Tech & Safety

The latest version of the brand’s iDrive display has made its way into the new X2. Based on the BMW Operating System 9, the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment screen are packed together in one housing, giving a modern touch to the cabin.

The upcoming version is roomier

The X2 enables innovative features such as in-car gaming, audio and video streaming, an intelligent personal assistant, and the taking of photos and recording of videos in the cabin, among others.

In the safety department, the vehicle boasts the latest version of the forward collision mitigation system, which “brings additional functions to help prevent an accident.” While an exit warning function is new to the safety equipment list, the Bavarian automaker added active blind spot detection as standard.

Engine & Powertrain

Under the hood is a 2.0-liter twin-turbo engine available in two tunes, with the M35i xDrive making 312 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. The xDrive28i, meanwhile, produces 241 horsepower and the same torque value. As the names suggest, power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

There are also front-wheel-drive sDrive variants, with the X2 sDrive 20i using a 1.5-liter three-cylinder twin-turbo with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The combined output is 170 horsepower. A diesel variant – dubbed X2 sDrive18d – is also coming with a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel.

The all-new BMW X2 is also arriving with an electric vehicle (EV) alternative to the iX2. While both versions are underpinned by the same platform, future BMW EVs will use the Neue Klasse platform.

The iX2’s dual-motor setup generates 313 horsepower and 494 Nm of torque, enough to complete a zero to 100 km/h acceleration time in 5.6 seconds. With a 64.8 kWh battery, the system offers a WLTP-rated range of 417 to 449 km.

BMW will take the covers of the all-new X2 at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show happening from October 25 to November 5 at the Tokyo Big Sight in Japan.
