A camouflaged test mule of Hyundai’s subcompact crossover was spotted.

Hyundai is currently working on the next generation Kona crossover, and it is scheduled to debut in 2023. We know this due to a recent report from motor1. The best part of this news is the source managed to spot the said model’s camouflaged test mule.

At a glance, the upcoming Hyundai Kona seems larger than the current model. Most of its details are hidden under thick padded covers, but the overall shape of the front fascia largely retains the shape of the old model.

Moreover, the prototype clearly bears a split-type headlight design much like the current model. Then again, the source says that it might also come with a design similar to the Palisade. This means a pair of vertically-oriented lights.

Moving on, not much was revealed with regards to the Kona prototype’s interior. Motor1 also says that the camouflaged unit that was spotted was using a gasoline engine. To view the said spy pics for the next-gen Kona prototype, click here.

To speculate, the next-generation Kona might also get the same wide array of engine options the current-gen model uses. In the Philippines, the Hyundai Kona uses a 2.0-liter inline-4 gasoline engine that can make up to 147 horsepower and 179 Nm of torque.

In other markets, the Kona also uses a naturally aspirated or turbocharged 1.0-liter inline-3 engine, several other 2.0-liter engines, a 1.6-liter hybrid, and a 1.6-liter diesel.

Of note, the current Hyundai Kona was initially released back in 2017. Locally, it is available with a standard retail price of Php 1,188,000.

The Philippine-spec Kona though remains to be the pre-facelift version. In other markets, a sharper-looking facelift was released back in 2020.

The Hyundai Kona N, a powerful turbocharged, 286 horsepower version is also available in select markets.
