Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is making a big splash at the upcoming 2023 Japan Mobility Show (formerly Tokyo Motor Show). One of the brand’s more significant reveals at the event is the Sustaina-C concept, which is a hatchback mostly made of acrylic resin - a.k.a. The Queen of All Plastics.
The Honda Sustaina-C concept car
For now, not much is known about this cute-looking concept. But based on pictures of the car presented by the brand, it looks a bit like the Honda e thanks to its round LED headlamps and its smooth exterior design.
Contrary to the Honda e, however, the Sustaina-C gets a boxier greenhouse. Its hood also appears to be flatter but diagonally angled towards the windshield. Come to think of it, the new Honda concept car carries the same vibes as the Honda Today kei car, which was all the rage in Japan from the 1980s to the 1990s.
To further double down on the Honda Today callback, the Sustaina-C even gets paired with a Pocket Concept which the brand says is a folding, electric-powered scooter that’s also made out of acrylic resin. Of note, the old Honda Today was packaged together with a folding scooter called the Motorcompo, with the latter being a Japanese Domestic Market-only option.
The Honda Pocket Concept, the Sustaina-C's scooter counterpart
The idea behind this was that the Today functioned as the main city car, while the scooter was used for very short distances. As such, the Sustaina-C and Pocket Concept might be their modernized, more sustainable counterparts.
Going back to the Sustaina-C, it demonstrates that car manufacturing can actually use resources that were recycled. So even if resources are limited, it shouldn’t hamper consumers from getting access to mobility.
Other clean and green Honda concepts that will be highlighted at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show are the SC e:Concept electric scooter, a Honda electric-powered vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, and a yet-to-be-named and revealed electric sports car.
