The 8.5-km toll bridge in Cebu is now connected after three years.

The Queen City of the South has a new landmark as the Cebu Cordova Link Bridge is now connected, and it is set to open in the first quarter (Q1) of 2022. The said bridge is also known as the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), a project of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC).

MPTC said that the casting of the final main bridge piece is now complete, a milestone that was achieved three years after the construction of the CCLEX. MPTC and its subsidiary Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC), wrapped up construction on the main bridge deck with a special joint concreting covering the remaining two-meter gap.

With the bridge now connected, CCLEC president and general manager Allan Alfon shared that the CCLEX will be open to motorists in Q1 2022.

“After today’s main bridge deck connection, we look forward to another milestone and that is opening CCLEX to the public in the first quarter of 2022. We can’t wait to see Cebuanos enjoy the ultimate expressway experience afforded by using this bridge,” said Alfon.

The CCLEX will have a speed limit of 80 km/h

The CCLEX is an 8.5-km toll bridge that links Cebu City to Mactan Island through the municipality of Cordova. It has two lanes in each direction, and can accommodate at least 50,000 vehicles daily.

It will be using an electronic toll collection system once it is opened to motorists. MPTC also said that CCLEX will have a speed limit of 80 km/h, and the toll bridge will feature motion sensors that can detect the vehicle’s weight. It is also said to be equipped with speed cameras as well as high-definition closed-circuit televisions (CCTV).

Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway night with lighted cross

The cross symbolizes Cebu’s Catholic roots

The CLLEX has a navigational clearance of 51 meters to let large vessels pass underneath the structure. In addition, the bridge features a lighted cross on the two pylons to symbolize Cebu’s Catholic roots, and to mark the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines.

“We add a deeper and loftier meaning to CCLEX by adding eight 40-meter crosses that celebrate the coming of Christ 500 years ago. These crosses will illuminate the skyline of Metro Cebu—beacons of hope and progress, symbols of achievement, and everything Cebuanos are proud of,” said MPTC Chairman Manuel “Manny” V. Pangilinan.
