Arctic Trucks gives Mitsubishi Montero Sport more imposing stance

It looks better than stock without going overboard.

The Montero Sport is probably the last true Mitsubishi off-roader standing, with its ladder-frame chassis and four-wheel-drive capability. While the midsize SUV’s third generation places an increased emphasis on luxury, Arctic Trucks isn’t letting anyone forget about what this machine can do in rugged terrain.

The Montero Sport AT35 looks like its ready to devour the terrain

For this mission, the Iceland-based tuner has modified a stock Montero Sport into the Montero Sport AT35, a beefier and meaner-looking iteration that exudes ruggedness without going overboard. The name likely comes from the fact that this bruiser now wears 35-inch tires wrapped around 17-inch alloy wheels

But that’s not all. The wider radials meant equipping the fenders with extensions, and making the machine look better than stock (Mitsubishi would probably want to take notes here). Even the visible panel lines add to the Montero Sport AT35’s overall vibe, and there’s a hint of an electric winch hiding behind the front skid plate.

The SUV now sports wider tracks, from 1,520mm to 1,645mm in front and from 1,515mm to 1,640mm at the rear. A heavy-duty suspension setup from Old Man Emu helped raise the Montero Sport AT35’s ground clearance from the stock 218mm to 270mm, as well as improving approach and departure angles to 34.5 and 28.8 degrees, respectively. Water wading capability is also likely to be given a boost from the standard 700mm.

Apart from the exterior and suspension modifications, the rest of the vehicle appears to be stock. No images were shown of the interior, which means that occupants can expect no radical changes where the layout and functionality of the cabin is concerned.

More importantly, the Montero Sport AT35 retains the standard version’s factory-installed powertrain, with a 2.4-liter MIVEC turbodiesel engine pumping out 178 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. There’s also a 3.0-liter V6 gasoline mill rated at 217 horsepower and 276 Nm of twist. Both engines work together with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and Mitsubishi’s proven Super Select 4WD-II system.

However, the Montero Sport AT35 isn’t just for snowy terrain, which means it should be able to make short work of other trails filled with dirt, mud, and rocks. It would be interesting to see if our local aftermarket shops can produce something as imposing yet clean-looking as this.
