This was evident in the latest teaser from Toyota Indonesia.

The internet has been abuzz with word of a next-generation Toyota Innova lately. There are as yet unconfirmed bits and pieces of what the new MPV will be like, and the latest is that the upcoming Innova will come with a hybrid powertrain.

2023 Toyota Innova teaser

There's at least one confirmed detail on the upcoming 2023 Toyota Innova

This much was hinted at by Toyota Indonesia in a new teaser image posted on its Facebook page. It shows a silhouette of the upcoming model traced by what look like electrical arcs on the roofline, belt line, and fenders. There’s also the accompanying caption that reads, “The new energy that comes with better power is on the way to energize you!”

And if the casual observer still has lingering doubts, Toyota quashes them by prominently showing off the 'Hybrid' badge on the front door. That last detail is significant since the current Innova still relies on a 2.8-liter common-rail turbocharged oil burner. Toyota’s latest teaser image all but confirms that the MPV will return to gasoline power with electric assist, for a reported output of 175 horsepower.

The hint could be in the name itself after all, as the model will supposedly be marketed as the Innova Hycross. This alludes to both a hybrid powertrain and a sportier image that’s more in keeping with a large crossover.

Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid

The powertrain is rumored to be the same one used by the hybrid versions of the Corolla Altis and Corolla Cross

But the details don’t stop there, with the new powertrain leading to speculation that there will be major changes under the skin. In particular, the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform shared with the Hilux and Fortuner is rumored to be saying goodbye for the Innova’s next iteration, to be replaced by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) chassis bringing front-wheel-drive and better interior space.

In addition, the all-new Innova is also expected to adopt the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver-assist features, as well as a more upscale interior and connectivity options.

Toyota has been mum so far on the 2023 Innova’s release date, but at the rate it’s been dropping hints, the launch could come sometime before the year ends.
