It boasts a full self-charging hybrid powertrain.

Mazda Motor Corporation, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation, introduced the new 2022 Mazda2 Hybrid. If the new model looks familiar, that’s because it is a rebadged Toyota Yaris. It will be an OEM model supplied by Toyota Motor Europe and will be added to Mazda’s European vehicle lineup.

Considering that the new model uses a hybrid powertrain, Mazda is getting closer to its electrification plan called Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030. It is a long-term vision of the Japanese automaker for technological development. Also, the timeline of the plan is in line with the Paris Agreement which will ban internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE) by 2030.

The Mazda2 Hybrid uses a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine with a 59kW electric motor for a total power output of 116 hp. It offers an efficient fuel consumption rating that ranges from 29.9 to 31.6 km/l, a zero to 100 km/h acceleration rating of 9.7 seconds, and CO2 emissions of just 93 to 87 g/km.

From a standstill, the vehicle automatically runs in EV mode, providing smooth and quiet acceleration. During normal driving, the gasoline engine and electric motor work together to offer optimum performance and the best fuel efficiency. And once it is decelerating or braking, kinetic energy is stored back in the high-performance battery, making it a full self-charging hybrid powertrain.

Mazda UK will still be offering the non-hybrid Mazda2 version in its lineup. With this, car buyers can get the subcompact hatchback version that better suits their daily mobility needs.

As for Mazda Philippines, the company hasn’t released a statement as to whether it will bring in the Mazda2 Hybrid. But if it comes to pass, the new Mazda2 will be joining the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30 as the models in the local lineup with a hybrid powertrain. The two said models recently received the M Hybrid Technology after Mazda Philippines revamped its lineup.
