These cars are the true definition of exotic

The definition of what an exotic car is can be varied. According to Wikipedia, supercars are exotic. Sure but there’s something about that word that screams more. Why?

Well, there are supercars, despite being…well…super, are not all that rare. There are some that are as common as leaves on trees like the Lamborghini Gallardo with 7,221 units built, the Audi R8 at almost 10,000 sold since 2007, and the Ferrari 458. Just go to Instagram and take a look at the millions of posts featuring these cars. Not so exotic now, are they?

Well, guess what. To school you on the truly “exotic” cars out there, here is a list of the ten, rarest cars to have existed on the face of the Earth. Most of these were sold in ultra-limited numbers, some through auctions, with some so rare that they’re displayed in museums.

1. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita

Coated with a special carbon fiber solution, the Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita is a shiny, sparkly, aerodynamic beast of a car that can reach 410 km/h with a face-melting acceleration rate of 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. So how rare is this shiny beast? Only two examples were made, and one is currently owned by Floyd Mayweather who bought it for $4.8 million.

2. Toyota GT-One

Initially designed for grand touring, the Toyota GT-One raced in the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Only two road-spec cars of this rare Toyota were built and the company didn’t even sell them. One now sits at the Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Germany and the other is in a museum in Japan.

3. Honda NSX-R GT

While the “normal” Honda NSX is already a rare car, the rarest, most bonkers variant is the Honda NSX-R GT. Only five were built in 2005 to conform to the Japan Touring Car Championship (JTCC) homologation rules.

It’s not the most powerful car on this list, but it surely is the defacto king of Hondas if there ever was one.

4. Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale

The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale has three points of note. First, it’s one of the world’s first supercars, and second, it’s one of the rarest Alfa Romeos ever built with only 18 examples.

And lastly, it has been called one of the most beautiful cars ever made by many car journos and automotive personalities around the world.

Despite the brand's reputation for unreliability, the 33 Stradale is rare enough that people will outright ignore that

5. McLaren F1 LM

As a tribute to the McLaren F1 GTR that won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, the McLaren F1 LM was built as the ultimate road car. Only five were sold with two sold to the Sultan of Brunei.

One papaya colored unit was also retained by McLaren to aid in the development of their F1 cars.

6. Mazda 767B

While the NSX-R GT is the king of Hondas, the Mazda 767B is the king of rotary Mazdas. It competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and at the JTCC. Like the Toyota GT-One, the Mazda 767B was never sold. A surviving example, however, was auctioned off in 2017 for a cool $1,750,000.

7. De Tomaso Pantera Si

Based on the already rare and awesome Pantera, the Pantera SI is a special edition that uses a 5.0-liter Ford 302 engine instead of the regular 351. Only 41 were made, 38 were sold, two were crash-tested, and one was reserved for the De Tomaso museum.

8. Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe

The Kellner Coupe stands out on this list as the oldest and the most expensive. In 1987, one was auctioned off for $9.7 million. With regards to the car itself, only 79 were built and it made around 300 horsepower out of a very weird, 12 liter SOHC U-16 aircraft engine.

9. Mitsuoka Orochi Devilman

Powered by a Toyota V6, the Orochi is categorized as a “Fashion-SuperCar.” It has been called the “World’s ugliest car” by Jalopnik and many reviewers have called its design polarizing at best, and ugly at worst.

Note though that the Orochi Devilman, which was made in collaboration with Go Nagai, the creator of Devilman Crybaby is an ultra-limited Orochi with only one example made. It is, however, the most affordable car on this list as it is only priced at $175,364.

10. Nissan R390 GT1

Built for the 1997 and 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans by Nissan Motorsport (NISMO), the R390 GT1 is powered by a 3.5-liter aluminum V8 engine capable of making 641 horsepower.

The road-going version available to the public, however, made 550 horsepower and was sold for $1,000,000. The sole currently existing 641 horsepower R390 GT1 is currently stored at the Nissan Private Heritage Collection in Zama, Japan.
