Suzuki to unveil first electric SUV concept next year: Report

Updated Dec 21, 2022 | Same topic: Automotive Industry Updates

The Japanese automaker is slowly making the switch.

Considering that more automakers have now at least one electric car in their lineup, one can say that Suzuki has been slow to adapt to electrification, despite having hybrid models in overseas markets. But the Japanese automaker is committed to making the future greener and more sustainable, and this goal will reportedly be spearheaded by the YY8 SUV concept.

In a report by Autocar India, Suzuki's Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki will be unveiling an all-electric crossover/SUV concept at the 2023 Auto Expo in January next year, with the official launch slated for 2025. It will be showcased alongside 15 other new Maruti Suzuki vehicles.

The Maruti YY8 SUV concept will be co-developed with Toyota, allowing Suzuki to use a derived e-TNGA (electric Toyota New Global Architecture) platform named the 27PL skateboard architecture. Size-wise, the report suggests that the new EV concept will be similar to the Hyundai Creta subcompact crossover.

As for the electrified powertrain, the YY8 SUV could be offered with 48 kWh and 59 kWh batteries. The smaller unit is expected to deliver 400 km of range, while the other could have a range of 500 km. Moreover, two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations should be made available as options.

“Auto Expo’23 is yet another opportunity for us to showcase our commitment towards the future of mobility through our range of sustainable and technology-driven products. Our showcases at Auto Expo’23 will highlight Maruti Suzuki’s commitment towards cleaner, greener, sustainable, and carbon-neutral offerings for tomorrow,” said Maruti Suzuki Managing Director & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi.

Aside from the Maruti YY8 SUV concept, the 5-door Suzuki Jimny is also expected to be unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo in India. While not a lot of details have been disclosed as of this writing, the 5-door off-roader SUV will likely get the same 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine paired with the AllGrip Pro four-wheel drivetrain.
