Pimp My Ride makes comeback as six-part limited series in U.K.

It will feature recycled car parts bought over eBay.

Those old enough to remember the MTV show Pimp My Ride likely harbored dreams of having their own cars tricked out, going on to become tuners or car mod enthusiasts themselves. Good news, then: the car makeover series is making a comeback of sorts in partnership with eBay, as a six-episode program in the U.K. beginning Friday, August 19.

Some things haven’t changed, such as the show’s objective of dressing up otherwise stock or ordinary-looking cars with often outrageous accessories. A rapper will still headline the series, with British hip-hop sensation Lady Leshurr taking over hosting duties from her U.S. counterpart Xzibit.

However, the focus will now be on using pre-loved ‘green’ auto components purchased from eBay’s Certified Recycled Hub, which holds an extensive array of original car parts and accessories salvaged from end-of-life vehicles. With a part sold every second by more than 40,000 traders, garages, and car businesses, eBay has become the U.K.’s biggest online marketplace for car repairs and modifications.

“eBay helps millions of motorists improve their vehicles every year,” according to eBay U.K. Head of Automotive Dr. Tony Tong. “That’s why we’re delighted to be partnering with MTV on Pimp My Ride, inspiring a new generation of DIY motor enthusiasts to experiment with cost effective, ‘greener’ car parts.”

Handling the transformation of the cars will be Wrench Studios, a one-stop auto shop based in Surrey run by brothers who were fans of the OG Pimp My Ride series.

“We grew up watching Pimp My Ride. Doing jobs on our own cars on the driveway is what got us into custom work and modifying,” said Wrench Studios CEO Hamid Iqbal.

“More and more people are doing jobs on vehicles themselves now, and like many of them, we use eBay to source parts, so it was natural for us to get involved in the new series. It’s been 15 years since it was last on air and we’re going to make sure it lives up to expectations,” he added.

An increasing number of car owners are turning to eBay for the parts they need

Some of the highlights on the upcoming program are a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle restoration and a 1992 Mitsubishi GTO featuring mods inspired by the Fast & Furious film franchise. Sounds like something to look forward to for fans of the original show.
