This new feature uses the brand’s in-house developed Lidar technology.

Nissan is advancing its autonomous driving technologies with the development of an intersection collision avoidance function.

Nissan recently demonstrated the intersection collision avoidance

The intersection collision avoidance function has been added to the Japanese automaker’s suite of Lidar-based advanced driver-assistance technologies which are currently in development. To showcase the new intersection-focused feature, the Japanese brand then carried out a demonstration at a Nissan facility using its ProPilot Concept Zero Prototype.

Nissan explains that the new safety feature can detect an object’s speed, location, and potential risk of a collision from a lateral direction. If the car sees a potential threat, the system will automatically apply the brakes, and release them once the situation has been cleared

The goal of Nissan’s intersection collision avoidance is to prevent accidents caused by driver error at intersections. This is seen as a lethal occurrence as drivers at intersections could get hit from all four corners of their cars.

In addition, developing Lidar technology will benefit the brand’s future models under the Nissan Ambition 2030 plan. The plan is looking to launch a total of 27 fully electric and hybrid e-Power vehicles by 2030, which is more than the earlier announcement of 23 electrified models.

“Development of this technology is being carried out under Nissan Ambition 2030, the company’s long-term vision. We are on course to develop collision-avoidance technology utilizing next-generation LIDAR technology by the mid-2020s,” said Senior Vice President Takao Asami, head of Nissan’s Research and Advanced Engineering Division.

“Aiming to develop future autonomous driving technologies that customers can use with peace of mind, Nissan is working to fully understand the entire range of accident scenarios by analyzing complex accidents that occur in the real world. Our efforts are aimed to substantially improve accident avoidance,” added Asami-san.

Currently, the Nissan Ariya is one such Nissan model that’s equipped with the ProPilot Assist 2.0, the brand’s latest advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). While the system is yet to be available in the Philippine market, Nissan currently offers Filipino buyers the Intelligent Mobility driver-assistive suite. The aforementioned includes numerous advanced safety features such as the around view monitor, forward collision warning, and emergency braking.
