The region where the Philippines belongs only sold around 10,000 units.

Nissan is one of the first mainstream brands to venture into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the LEAF. Now, the decision to go electric early has paid off as the Japanese automaker achieved a 1,000,000 EV sales milestone globally.

Europe saw the most Nissan EV sales at around 320,000 units, followed by homeland Japan at around 230,000 units. Only 10,000 units were sold in the “other regions” category including the Philippines.

It was in 2010 when Nissan launched the LEAF, an all-electric hatchback that has sold more than 650,000 units worldwide. In 2022, the LEAF was joined by the Ariya and Sakura in the automaker’s EV pool, with the latter bagging various accolades including the 2022 to 2023 Japan Car of the Year.

The LEAF leads the brand's EV push

Nissan launched the LEAF in the Philippines in 2021. It offers Filipinos who want to own an EV a range of 311 km. For reference, the LEAF can theoretically drive from Manila to Baguio, and still have around 50 km of range left. The all-electric powertrain can produce 148 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque.

Another benefit of owning an EV is the more affordable maintenance cost over cars with an internal combustion engine (ICE). In a test run conducted by the Meralco Power Lab when the LEAF was launched in the country, the EV can be charged for Php 363.40 only, which was five times less than paying for a full tank of fuel.

Nissan Philippines, Inc. is selling the LEAF with a price tag of Php 1,998,000.

By 2030, the automaker targets to introduce new 19 EV models. That is planned for global markets so we still are not sure how many will arrive in the country.

For your reference, you can check out the list of Nissan’s global cumulative EV sales:
