Ahead of its global debut at the 30th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, the Japanese automaker has already previewed the exterior design of its upcoming all-new compact SUV.

In comparison to the concept model unveiled last year, the preview shots of the production appeared to host identical design cues. However, there are a few differences to help us determine which is which.

The front fascia gets a different grille that looks open than the one in the concept, which makes sense considering it is not an electric vehicle (EV). The illuminated hexagonal fog light housing on the lower bumper also did not make the final cut. Instead, the vehicle sports rectangular fog light housings. The hood looks similar but the lines seem sharper and crisper.

At the sides, conventional mirrors replace the camera-based side mirrors in the concept. While the rugged-looking character lines appear untouched, the automaker added protruding door handles and less prominent honeycomb trims beneath the doors. The cladding in the production version is flat black, while the concept went for a gloss black finish. Rounding up the side profile is the set of more conventional-looking wheels.

The rear end features an identical taillight design to the concept model. Although, similar to the front hexagonal housings, the rear hexagonal lighting that appears to mimic an exhaust is not found in the production model. While the slim third brake light was not seen in the production version, Mitsubishi added a rear windshield wiper and a shark fin antenna.

“In this all-new model, we have further evolved the design to meet the needs of the compact SUV market, which has been growing in recent years,” Mitsubishi Motors Division General Manager of Design, Seiji Watanabe. “In addition to the robustness and powerfulness characteristics of Mitsubishi Motors, we have pursued a design that is more stylish, energetic, and distinctive than ever.”

No interior details were unveiled. Mitsubishi, however, will soon debut its newest ASEAN-developed crossover at the said auto show in Indonesia, which will commence on August 25. It will be displayed alongside the Xpander, Xpander Cross, and Pajero Sport.

“At the upcoming Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, we hope that even more customers will discover what Mitsubishi Motors has to offer and empathize with our design through this all-new compact SUV,” added Watanabe.
