Should Mitsubishi PH bring this in?

With the fast-growing crossover market, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is previewing a new contender in the segment with the global premiere of the XFC Concept.

The Mitsubishi XFC Concept is the latest model tailored for the ASEAN market, reported to be a B-segment (subcompact) crossover. It will make its first public appearance at the Vietnam Motor Show 2022 to be held from October 26 to 30.

“We will launch the new compact SUV sequentially in the ASEAN markets including Vietnam in the fiscal year 2023,” said Mitsubishi Motors President and Chief Executive Officer Takao Kato.

The futuristic yet rugged appearance stands out right off the bat. At the front, L-shaped headlights are paired with the unique louver-like daytime running lights (DRLs) below it. These surround the evolved Dynamic Shield fascia, which has become a signature of the Japanese car brand.

Looking at the side profile, the Mitsubishi XFC Concept comes with aggressive character lines and wheel wells, providing an SUV-like appeal. The wheel design is also unique, which should be interesting to see in the metal at the aformentioned motor show later this month. Like the front, the rear end also features T-shaped lighting with its tail lights.

Bright-looking interior finish

Inside, the cabin appears to have a different theme from the exterior’s aggressive design as it looks bright and composed. The horizontal theme, also seen in the Mitsubishi Xpander facelift, is adopted in the XFC. On top of the dashboard are the digital instrument gauge cluster and infotainment touchscreen enclosed in a single housing.

It sports a rugged SUV design

No powertrain details have been disclosed as of this writing. But the automaker did mention that the presumed subcompact crossover will be equipped with a high ground clearance and four drive modes: Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud. The Wet mode, introduced for the first time in a Mitsubishi, is perfect for ASEAN countries especially during the rainy season.

“In the future, we plan to add an electrified variant to the lineup and to also roll it out in regions outside ASEAN. We hope to grow the model from a vehicle for the ASEAN market to a global strategic vehicle, making it a core model like the sales-leading Xpander crossover MPV,” added Kato.

Mitsubishi is expanding its ASEAN portfolio

Considering that the Mitsubishi XFC Concept is developed for the ASEAN market, one can hope that its production version will eventually arrive in the Philippines. After all, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) doesn’t have a subcompact crossover entry just yet, since the ASX was phased out from the local market.
