Traffic enforcers will be manning the area.

The country might be lowering the alert levels due to the improved COVID-19 situation, but the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is not taking any chances. MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos inspected the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) in preparation for the long weekend for the observance of “Undas.”

Sure, the MMDA will be closing cemeteries in Metro Manila during Undas to prevent mass gatherings, but the government agency expects an increase in passengers going home to their provinces. With this, traffic enforcers will be positioned at intersections near bus terminals to manage traffic more efficiently.

“As Undas approaches, we are beginning to see an increase in the number of passengers. What is important here is we are ready. We are coordinating with local government units and all other concerned for the safety of the public,” said MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos.

Members of the Road Emergency Group are also present in the traffic management operation, conducting random or on-the-spot breathalyzer tests on bus drivers. This is to ensure that these drivers won’t be taking the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs, especially on long provincial trips. Abalos said that those who fail the test won’t be allowed to drive unless they are fully rested.

As a reminder, the MMDA Chairman himself appealed to the public to follow the proper health guidelines set by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID). Some of these guidelines include the proper wearing of masks, face shields, and maintaining social distancing at all times.

The MMDA could face a more challenging task in the upcoming days as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is planning to increase the passenger capacity in public transport. If this comes to pass, MMDA traffic enforcers would have to work twice in ensuring that the COVID-19 safety guidelines are followed by commuters.
