For those who missed it, the World Design Day happened last April 27. And Volkswagen decided to celebrate it by revealing a concept pickup truck version of the ID. Buzz electric van. The concept is based on the pre-production version which is not far off from the model that debuted earlier this year.
Volkswagen ID. Buzz pickup truck concept
Looking at the VW ID. Buzz pickup truck concept, it comes with an unconventional finish as it doesn’t get a rugged and off-road appearance. Instead, Klaus Zyciora, head of Volkswagen Group Design, integrated details that make the concept look more like a lifestyle truck that’s ideal for city drives.
The two sunroofs from the pre-production version have been replaced with a blacked-out panel, which helps prevent scratches better than metal when hauling cargo on the roof. This improves the concept’s functionality as a pickup model. Meanwhile, the rear taillights are unchanged despite the third seating row being scrapped from the body.
To complete the transformation, the second-row doors appear to be smaller and are hinged as opposed to providing a sliding function. Of course, the concept should be powered by an electrified powertrain, following other models in the growing all-electric pickup market such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and the GMC Hummer EV.
Pre-production Volkswagen ID. Buzz concept
Volkswagen asked on its official Twitter account whether the design concept looks good or is better off as just an idea. With that being said, the company could consider bringing the ID. Buzz pickup truck concept to life if it gets positive feedback. But as of this writing, no production plans have been laid out for the concept.
For now, the German marque is looking forward to the launching of its next-generation Amarok active pickup truck later this year, based on the current Ford Ranger’s T6.2 platform. Reports suggest that the all-new Amarok will be arriving in Volkswagen Philippines’ lineup in 2023.
