The automaker has been emboldened by the success of its EVs.

Hyundai is placing its bets on electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicle technology as among the key drivers for its growth prospects in 2023.

Hyundai Chair Euisun Chung

Hyundai Chair Euisun Chung was among executives who spoke at the automaker's town hall meeting

This was among the points highlighted during Hyundai Motor Group’s town hall meeting held Tuesday at the automaker’s Namyang R&D Center. The event was attended by executives and employees of both Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation.

“Last year, two cars that use our dedicated full electric vehicle platform E-GMP (electric global modular platform) – the Ioniq 5 and the EV6 were named ‘World Car of the Year’ and ‘European Car of the Year’ respectively and were among the top five EVs sold globally, demonstrating a successful start to our transition to electrification,” Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung said.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

The automaker has been encouraged by the success of its electric offerings such as the Ioniq 5

Building on these achievements, the company reportedly plans to launch various electric models for 2023, ranging from light models to flagship offerings. These include the upcoming EV9 and Ray EVs from Kia, as well as the Kona EV from Hyundai.

Self-driving Hyundai cars are also on the horizon as part of targeted growth areas for the automaker, including robotics, energy, and future mobility.

“In autonomous driving technology, we are planning to launch models capable of autonomous driving Level 3 on highways in Korea. We’re also planning to commercialize robotaxis with autonomous driving Level 4 in North America,” added Chung.

2023 Genesis G90

The 2023 Genesis G90 will reportedly have Level 3 autonomous driving capability

To this end, Hyundai will launch the G90 under its Genesis luxury brand in the first half of 2023, among the models equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving capability. Through its joint venture with global tech company Aptiv, Hyundai will also work with ride-share companies in operating Ioniq 5 robotaxis equipped with Level 4 self-driving tech.

Hyundai and Kia also committed to providing over-the-air (OTA) software updates to all models sold globally by 2025. “Company systems, including R&D, must be upgraded to achieve a ‘software-centered transition.’ This will enable us to secure the capability to produce flawless Software Defined Vehicles (SDV) and take the lead among the global competition,” Chung said.
