As more automakers use next-generation technologies to develop future mobility products such as electric vehicles (EVs), Honda announced that it is leveraging advanced virtual reality (VR) technology.

The VR technology is being used by the Japanese automaker to develop its EV models such as the all-new Honda Prologue. The importance of this has been underscored when the pandemic first imposed travel restrictions as global teams managed to continue their development works in their respective studios.

One of the advantages of VR technology is the immediate feedback for global design and engineering teams. With it, the teams can work together in a VR environment more efficiently. Moreover, applying changes to the clay modeling, color, material, and finishes is faster.

“Incorporating virtual and augmented reality in the design process allowed our Honda engineers and designers to merge digital content and physical assets in a cohesive way to interact with what they’re experiencing and touching in an immersive environment,” said Honda Design Studio VR Technology Leader Matthieu Geslin.

While most of the Honda Prologue’s exterior was designed using a traditional full-size clay model, the interior was mainly carried out by VR and augmented reality (AR) technology. Designing using VR provided the teams with visualization of unlimited color and material applications.

“We don’t want to lose emotion and the human touch to Honda design, so we won’t pursue a purely digital approach, but we are really excited about the Honda products that will be coming to customers in the future by leveraging VR technology,” said Matthieu.

Working with global teams is now more accessible

With VR, we can expect that Honda’s plans of introducing 30 EV models by 2030 will be designed with the assistance of the said technology. Two of which will be electrified sports cars. These are said to provide customers with fun drives without comprising the brand’s commitment to carbon neutrality.
