Could the Philippine market be next?

The next-gen Honda Civic Type R is making its presence known more in the ASEAN region as it has officially made its way to Thailand. This makes the Land of Smiles the second in the region to get the hot hatch following Vietnam.

Honda Cars Thailand is showcasing the new Civic Type R at the 39th Thailand International Motor Expo alongside models such as the all-electric e:Prototype SUV concept and Civic sedan. The pricing has yet to be disclosed but the company shared some features that Thai customers can look forward to.

Powering the performance-oriented hot hatch is a 2.0-liter VTEC turbocharged gasoline engine. If we follow the JDM-spec model, the power unit should make 325 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. No automatic transmission is made available for this generation so we are left with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. It uses a front-wheel-drive configuration completed by a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.

Making the drives suit different conditions are the four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, +R, and for the first time, Individual. For safer drivers, the brand’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Honda Sensing, is equipped in the vehicle, along with a blind spot warning system.

Now, we Filipinos can somehow get our hopes high that the next-gen Civic Type R will land on our shores. Besides, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) already axed the Civic Type R FK8 from its lineup, leaving room for the anticipated entry of the latest iteration. But, HCPI has yet to release an official statement regarding the all-new Civic Type R.

The Civic Type R is arriving in more ASEAN countries

If that happens though, there might be a possibility that Filipino car buyers have to deal with the model’s long waiting list due to production delays in the automaker’s Japanese plants. In our previous report, customers should expect an estimated delivery time of more than half a year. Moreover, Honda is limiting the production of the hot hatch to 400 units only, or 4,800 units per year.
