Filipinos have witnessed the growth of Geely’s business network in the country since the brand was launched in 2019 under Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP). When the Chinese carmaker first started, it only offered the Geely Coolray subcompact crossover under one dealership in North EDSA.
Despite the humble beginnings, Geely Auto, led by SGAP President and CEO Mikihisa Takayama, managed to open 10 more dealerships in less than two years, with Geely Makati as the latest addition. It has also introduced two more models in the Philippine lineup which are the Azkarra and the 7-seater Okavango.
Soon-to-be SGAP President and CEO Yosuke Nishi
Now, the company has decided to move forward in the local market with a new President and CEO named Yosuke Nishi. He is currently the Executive Vice President of SGAP and will be appointed as the head of the company starting May 1, 2021. Meanwhile, Mikihisa Takayama will be assigned to a new role in Sojitz Corporation in Tokyo, Japan.
“Since I am really fascinated by the Filipino culture, I wanted to come back to the Philippines. And during my short stay in Japan, I had been visiting the Philippines for the preparation of the establishment of SGAP. I have worked on getting approval from Sojitz to establish the Geely business,” said SGAP’s incoming President & CEO Yosuke Nishi.

Yosuke Nishi has been around SGAP since 2019, but has already started his career in the Philippine automotive industry as an executive from 2012 to 2018. Since he has been around for quite some time, he admitted that he learned to love the country and the Filipinos.
“Since SGAP, the Geely business in the Philippines, is my baby, I felt the need to grow it together with our customers and business partners. I want to assure everyone that SGAP/Geely Philippines can give the best services and experiences to the customers,” concluded Nishi.

Geely Coolray Launch
Launched in September 2019, the Geely Coolray was introduced with three variants: the Comfort Turbo, the Premium Turbo, and the Sport Turbo. In 2022, Geely Philippines axed the Sport variant.
A special edition version was available for a time. But when the marque updated the model into the Coolray for 2025, the SE variants including the SE Sport trim made a return.
Geely Coolray Exterior
Depending on the variant, the Coolray is equipped with a power liftgate, LED lighting, power-folding side mirrors, and a sporty-looking roof-mounted spoiler. Other trims come standard with halogen lighting, projector halogen headlamps, and a manual liftgate. All come kitted out with LED daytime running lights.
The top-spec SE Sport and the mid-spec SE Premium then ride on a set of 18-inch alloy wheels. The entry-level SE Comfort meanwhile gets a smaller 17-inch set.
Geely Coolray Interior
Step inside the Coolray and you’ll find a cabin that can comfortably accommodate five occupants. It also has a default cargo volume of 330 liters.
On the top-spec SE Sport model, it gets power-adjustable seating, a leather steering wheel, and a single-zone automatic air-conditioning system. Standard on all variants is a 60:40 split folding rear seat.
Technology & Safety Features
Handling the entertainment needs of the Coolray's occupants is a 10.25-inch touchscreen headunit. For connectivity, it uses QD Link. The said touchscreen is then connected to a six-piece speaker system.
Available as standard to the Coolray is an array of safety features. These include anti-lock braking, traction control, stability control, and hill-descent control. The higher-spec models add on to those with a reverse and blind spot monitor, while the top-spec SE Sport gets a 360-degree view monitor.
Both the SE Premium and SE Sport also come with Smart Keyless Entry and tire pressure monitoring. Only the SE Sport comes with an active park assist system.
Standard on all Coolray variants are dual front airbags. The SE Premium and SE Sport meanwhile get additional side airbags, while only the SE Sport comes with curtain airbags.
