The GT trims also receive a power upgrade.

Most of you have already read about the next-generation Ford Mustang revealed at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show. But to refresh your memory, Ford will start selling the famous pony car in 2023. Now, Ford has actual output figures for the top-spec Dark Horse variant. Specifically, it can make up to 500 horsepower and 567 Nm of torque.

Thanks to those figures, the Dark Horse Mustang is shaping up to be the most powerful naturally aspirated V8-powered car in Ford’s current lineup.  That’s also a lot of ponies over the previous generation model’s 462-horsepower Mustang Mach 1 version.

With regards to how the Dark Horse’s 5.0-liter power unit achieved this, it’s thanks to forged connecting rods, stronger camshafts, and a “uniquely balanced” crankshaft. With those parts, the engine can take higher pressures necessary for making loads of horsepower without a turbo.

Further adding to the sportiness of the Mustang Dark Horse is the availability of a Tremec six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox, though a ten-speed automatic gearbox will also be made available. Also, the more affordable four-cylinder EcoBoost versions will only come with automatic gearboxes globally.

For the other two next-gen Mustang trims, there are also performance gains as well. The GT variants can now make up to 486 horsepower and 566 Nm of torque. That’s a considerable bump in power over the old GT Mustang trims.

In turn, the next-gen EcoBoost versions can churn out up to 315 horsepower and 474 Nm of torque. For reference, the previous-gen EcoBoost Mustang can make up to 310 horsepower. In this case, the output bump isn’t as dramatic as the other next-gen Mustang trims, but the additional 5 horsepower still sounds like a win for the Blue Oval Brand.
