DPWH aims to wrap it up by December.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark A. Villar announced that the ongoing Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project is now at 70 percent completion. The project, funded by a grant from the People’s Republic of China, is targeted to attain substantial completion before the end of the year.

The bridge will help reduce traffic in Manila

With a cost of P3.39-billion, the Binondo-Intramuros Project will connect the districts of Binondo and Intramuros in Manila. It is constructed with a 418-meter viaduct structure and ramp over Estero de Binondo, a 298-meter Binondo up-ramp at Muelle Dela Industria Street at Binondo side, a 191-meter up-ramp at Magallanes/Riverside Drive, and a 164-meter down ramp at Solana Street in Intramuros.

Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations Emil K. Sadain said that the installation of prefabricated precast slab available on-site will commence shortly. Moreover, the fabricated steel box girders which will be utilized for the viaduct and ramp over Estero de Binondo are expected to arrive from China by August 2021.

Expect the bridge to be completed by December

Upon completion, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is expected to accommodate around 30,000 vehicles per day. DPWH also noted that the said bridge will help extend the operational life of the existing Jones, Delpan, and MacArthur Bridge by decongesting traffic. This project is part of the Metro Manila Logistic Improvement Program to reduce traffic on the country’s major roads.

Some of the ongoing DPWH projects to decongest traffic in Metro Manila include the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge and Kalayaan Bridge. The Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge is a 506-meter bridge that will connect the cities of Makati and Mandaluyong, while the Kalayaan Bridge aims to reduce travel time between Bonifacio Global City (BGC) and Ortigas to 12 minutes only.

With these projects in mind, DPWH’s statement earlier this year saying that every city in Metro Manila will only be 15 to 20 minutes away by 2022 is now seeing daylight. The government agency has also unveiled its plan to reduce travel time from Ilocos to Bicol to just nine hours via the Luzon Spine Expressway Network (LSEN) program.
