This is in response to the increasing number of vehicles in EDSA.

As the country has shifted into less strict general community quarantine (GCQ) restrictions, the traffic situation relatively got worse especially on busy roads like EDSA. This is taking place despite the announcement from the government that the traffic on the said highway is now lighter as compared to the previous years.

With that being said, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) decided to step in to help ease traffic congestion in EDSA by reopening the Dario Bridge U-turn slot in Quezon City. MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos shared, “this would benefit the motorists because they can make a U-turn easily with a shorter route.”

The Dario Bridge U-turn slot was previously closed to give way to the EDSA Bus Carousel. To open up more lanes, Abalos coordinated with the private contractor of the Common Station to move back the contractor’s fences at its work areas located between SM North EDSA and Trinoma.

Working hand-in-hand with the reopening of the U-turn slot is the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)’s five action plans that aim to improve situations at the EDSA Busway station. The said action plan aims to reduce waiting time for commuters and improve the flow of traffic.

Meanwhile, the MMDA is in constant coordination with concerned government agencies to improve mobility and keep traffic moving in Metro Manila considering that the number of vehicles is beginning to increase. Some of its mentioned actions include the road clearing operations on Mabuhay lanes and the widening of the Camp Crame area in Quezon City.

“The next big thing in the next two years is the widening of the Balintawak area, one of the traffic-prone areas, that would widen the area to five lanes. The Department of Public Works and Highways shall work on the project for a period of one to two years,” said Abalos.
