Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos went over to several flyovers along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) to inspect the areas. He said that he wants the areas to be decluttered after seeing multiple obstructions including illegally parked and abandoned vehicles, broken concrete barriers, and more.

The areas inspected by the MMDA Chairman include EDSA-Kamuning, Timog, and Quezon Avenue. In the pursuit of eliminating clutters and obstructions, the government agency will place no parking and tow away signages in the said areas. He added that violators will be held accountable by saying, “I will make sure that violators will be sanctioned and issued violation tickets for illegal parking.”

Abalos said the MMDA will be coordinating with the proper authorities in decluttering the said areas mentioned above. He further clarified that the decluttering operations will be applied not only in EDSA, but also within the jurisdiction of MMDA.

A good initiative to clean up EDSA

To do just that, the government agency has instructed the heads of Metro Parkways Clearing Group (MPCG) and Road Emergency Group (REG) to remove unnecessary MMDA equipment in the said areas. The discarded damaged orange barriers will be disposed of, while broken concrete barriers will be smashed and will be used as filling materials at the MMDA Tumana impounding area in Marikina.

“The equipment that the MMDA is utilizing for emergency purposes will be retained, but not this much. Further, we will identify strategic locations to relocate the remaining equipment. MMDA should set an example here,” said Benhur Abalos.

More areas in Metro Manila are expected to be decluttered soon

Benhur Abalos was appointed as the new MMDA Chairman earlier this year, succeeding the late Danilo Lim. Prior to Abalos’ current assignment, he served the city of Mandaluyong as its Mayor from 1998 to 2004 and later again from 2006 to 2016. He is known for his “no backride policy” which was implemented to reduce "riding-in-tandem" incidents in the city.
