DPWH Secretary Mark Villar opens the APEC Road as well as a new bridge.

It may have been a long time coming, but faster journeys await those traveling to and from Los Baños, Laguna with the inauguration of a new express road.

Last November 20, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officially inaugurated APEC Road, a 3.8-kilometer direct access highway connecting Pili Drive, Institute of Plant Breeding Road in UP Los Baños to Gov. F.T. San Luis Road in the municipality of Bae.

The ceremony was led by DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, UP President Atty. Danilo Concepcion and UPLB Chancellor Dindo Sanchez.

According to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, the new thoroughfare is expected to make it easier for motorists to visit Los Baños and Bae. "With the completion of the APEC Road, travel time from Los Baños to Bae has been reduced to 10 minutes,” he said.

Begun during the administration of former president Fidel V. Ramos who served from 1992 to 1998, the completed road is also seen to address the worsening traffic congestion along the Calamba – Santa Cruz – Famy Junction Road, as well as on Daang Maharlika Road.

UP's Atty. Concepcion said that they have been trying to improve access to and from the university and that they intend to address the current infrastructure gap. The APEC Road, he adds, is a part of a master plan to improve the university’s potential as a premier academic institution.

Along with the new APEC Road, Sec. Villar and the UP officials also opened a new 60-meter pre-stressed concrete girder bridge connecting Victoria M. Ela Ave. to Rambutan Road; this replaces the original bridge which was destroyed by Typhoon Milenyo's rampage back in 2006.
