The Aguinaldo-Daang Hari flyover opens! Also, how will the government handle the possibly massive increase in traffic during the 2019 SEA games in December?

1. Aguinaldo-Daang Hari Flyover opens

As of last Saturday, October 12, 2019, the Department of Public Works or DPWH has officially opened the Daang Hari Intersection located in Anabu, Imus City, Cavite.

According to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, the recently finished and newly opened four-lane flyover will help alleviate traffic on nearby roads connected to the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) and on the Aguinaldo Highway-Daanghari Road intersection, one of the busiest intersections in Cavite.

It will also serve to cut down travel time for those heading to and from Metro Manila and Cavite. He then added that the new flyover will also aid with the government’s efforts in reducing air pollution. If there’s less traffic, there’s less air pollution after all.

Started way back in March 2016, the said fly-over was originally scheduled to open earlier but its construction was delayed due to a boom crane accident where its operator had erroneously placed a girder on top of a concrete beam causing the aforementioned structure to collapse. This accident took place in 2018.

2. In other news…Brace for SEA Games traffic!

In case you forgot, the 2019 Southeast Asian Games or SEA Games will be held in several areas here in Metro Manila starting November.

Why are we talking about this? Well, for one thing, the SEA Games will undoubtedly draw in a lot of spectators, athletes that need to be transported to and from sports venues, and much other personnel who are essential for the said sporting events like heads of states which by themselves will need escorts and the like.

Philsports Arena located in Pasig

The Philsports Arena, one of the 2019 SEAG venues, is located near Ortigas BGC. A very busy business area even on regular days

The said venues that will host the SEA Games will include; the Philsports Arena, the Makati Coliseum, the World Trade Center, Starmall EDSA, SM Megamall ice rink, the SM Mall of Asia skating rink, Filoil Flying V Center, the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, and the Manila Hotel tent.

While a venue located in New Clark City will host the athletics events and swimming events, the roads around the venues in Metro Manila will undoubtedly see a massive increase in automobile traffic.

Public transportation might also see a possible surge of commuters. Note also that around 10,000 athletes from different parts of Asia will be competing in the 2019 SEAG. To house them, around 24 hotels will also be involved in the event.

3. How the government will deal with this…?

To address this potentially massive surge in traffic during the length of the 2019 SEA games, a high-ranking PNP official has revealed that they are planning to deploy around 20,000 personnel from several government agencies. Not only will this personnel provide safety and security but they’re also going to be tasked to handle the increase in traffic congestion.
