The all-new Subaru BRZ sports coupe isn’t just about a slicker design and improved performance that fans can look forward to. Enhanced safety is among its key attributes, as the car clinches the Top Safety Pick+ award from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The all-new BRZ recently premiered in our market, but it has already gained top safety honors in the U.S.
This is the first time that the BRZ has been so honored, now that the latest iteration comes equipped with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The feature is also offered on the Philippine release which made its debut at the recent 2022 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).
“We are thrilled that the all-new BRZ received a Top Safety Pick+ award right out of the gate,” said Subaru of America President & Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Doll. “Our priority with BRZ is to provide customers with an exciting and engaging sports car with the highest standards in safety.”

The 2022 BRZ received top marks for IIHS crashworthiness and crash avoidance scenarios. Coming in Premium and Limited trim levels with EyeSight technology, the model earned superior ratings in accidents, whether these involve other vehicles or pedestrians. Headlamps across the range also achieved the highest possible score for performance.
Apart from the BRZ, six other Subaru models have earned an IIHS award for 2022. These are divided into the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ categories. The winners are:
2022 Top Safety Pick+
- Subaru Ascent (TSP for five consecutive years; sold as the Evoltis in the PH market)
- Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (TSP+ for four consecutive years)
- Subaru Legacy (TSP for 17 consecutive years)
- Subaru Outback (TSP for 14 consecutive years)
2022 Top Safety Pick
- Subaru Crosstrek with EyeSight and specific headlamps (TSP for 11 consecutive years; sold as the XV in the PH market)
- Subaru Impreza 5-door with EyeSight and specific headlamps (TSP for 15 consecutive years)
Minimum requirements for the IIHS Top Safety Pick award include ‘Good’ ratings in each of the six crashworthiness evaluations, as well as available front crash protection that achieves ‘Advanced’ or ‘Superior’ ratings in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The Top Safety Pick+ honor is reserved for those with ‘Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ headlamp ratings.
Since 2013, Subaru has won a total of 62 Top Safety Pick+ Awards from the IIHS in the U.S. market. The 2022 BRZ is now part of that number, with safety attributes that Filipino customers will no doubt appreciate.

The Subaru BRZ is a 2+2 fastback coupe that was developed in partnership with Toyota. Recently, the second-gen BRZ made its debut at the 2022 MIAS. It is available in two variants only which are priced from Php 2,399,000 to Php 2,499,000. Powering this vehicle is a 2.4-liter DOHC boxer-4 gasoline engine capable of generating 234 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission is used to send power from the engine to the rear wheels.
Dimensions-wise, the BRZ measures 4,265 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width, and 1,310 mm in height, with a wheelbase and ground clearance rated at 2,575 mm and 130 mm, respectively. In the Philippines, this Japanese sports car competes against the likes of the Toyota 86, Mazda MX-5, and Nissan 370Z.
