The small SUV Trend soldiers on and is now more prevalent within the market with each car brand offering one in their line-up. Subaru on the other hand barely breaks a sweat with introducing the newest crossover in their lineup with 2019 Subaru XV.

Subaru XV 2019 front view

Subaru really knows the secret sauce

Ever since the early nineties, Subaru practically came up with the concept of the small SUV/Raised Sedan crossover concept. You can thank Honda and Toyota for introducing the CRV and the RAV4 and running away with that idea but Subaru really knows the secret sauce, and it can’t be more apparent than with the Subaru XV.

It is about the symmetrical all-wheel drive, the raised ride height, and new chassis that shares its platform with other and future Subaru vehicles that make it a more rugged option.

You would be wrong to doubt the off-road capabilities, but it’s still not as capable as Subaru’s full-sized options such as the Forester and even the Outback. It’s more of a raised hatchback or a wagon and puts it in the same territory as the Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke and to some extent the Ford Ecosport.

Plastic cladding in and around the wheel wells giving the Subaru the macho look

If you noticed one thing about the short list of models that rival the Subaru XV is that you can’t really compare those models to the XV. To be totally honest, The XV is more of a niche product. You really can't compare it to those vehicles because only the Subaru XV has legitimate off-road chops.

Looking at the vehicle you can find many clues from the current design language of the Subaru vehicles. The front DRL comes standard for this vehicle and it compliments the wider track and longer hood compared to the previous generation.

The tail-lights are angular and properly raked just like in the current Impreza. What I do love are the plastic cladding in and around the wheel wells giving the Subaru the macho look it deserves.

EyeSight is about all these systems working in unison to keep you safe

Another feature not available in every other model in its category is Subaru’s famed EyeSight Technology. It’s a camera and computer system embedded within the car that recognizes and mitigates various threats to your driving experience and interacts with you using chimes and actively braking for your safety.

It’s more of a unified system that consists of adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assistance, blind spot assist crash mitigation and parking assist. EyeSight is about all these systems working in unison to keep you safe.

Keeping things in check is Subaru’s vaunted Symmetrical All-wheel drive system that locks the differential at a 60/40 Front/Rear Bias. For off-roading, you can activate the X-Drive system to access a suite of electronic diff-locks and control the hill-descent and climb mechanism.

Subaru XV Engine Bay

The system is willing to kick down and keep the rev range to muster up all the torque available

The only available engine is a 2.0-liter boxer engine giving 154 hp paired to a Lineartronic CVT system. I personally do not preferCVT’s with its simulated gearing and highway drone sound but Subaru seems to have it all pat down.

The system is willing to kick down and keep the rev range to muster up all the torque available.

High-way pulls are just alright with the Subaru XV 2019 but you have to set your expectations with CVT systems and non-turbo Subarus and for what it is, power is plentiful.

Fuel economy takes a huge hit because of the underpowered engine having to pull the weight on the car along with the system’s all-wheel-drive system. In the city, you can/t complain much about the 6-7 km/l efficiency rating.

Nothing much can be said about the interior except that it keeps everything properly laid out for the driver. Subaru loves using black-colored trim and plastic bits here and there, but there is nothing wrong with this implementation.

It only makes this better when the time comes to clean the interior. Everything is properly screwed together and gaps between the panels are nowhere to be seen.

At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself and study your priorities. If you want a small rugged, off-road capable vehicle that can haul your family and 2-3 weeks worth of grocery, The 2019 Subaru XV us for you.

Subaru was founded in 1955 and initially was known for its Aircraft Research Laboratory under Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Several years later though, Subaru becomes one of the first ever auto manufacturer to market a full-time All-Wheel drive passenger vehicle in 1986.

Today, Subaru has become one of the world’s leading car makers whose products are known for their performance, safety, reliability, and versatility. These traits are all thanks to their Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and their very famous Boxer Engine.
