Which 2022 Suzuki Celerio variant should you buy? [Comparison Guide]

Fans of small hatchbacks will have more choices now that the 2022 Suzuki Celerio has premiered in our market. The third-generation model previously made its debut in India last year, boasting a new design, more space, added safety, and a more fuel-efficient engine.

A new look defines both variants of the new Celerio, featuring increased dimensions all around compared to the previous model. The more balanced design makes the new version look less tall despite actually sitting higher with an increase in ground clearance.

Standard across the range is the radiant grille featuring the Suzuki emblem in the middle, with the halogen headlamps on either side bridged by single chrome strip curved upwards as if smiling. The front bumper now features a prominent black trim that houses the fog lamps at the corners.

At the sides, the integrated fenders are now bigger and lend an overall impression of beefiness to the small hatchback. The cleaner profile does away with the sharp lines of the old Celerio, going for a more rounded look. Power-adjustable exterior mirrors perch at the corners of the front windows.

New combination tail lamps flank the rear hatch sitting above the bigger rear bumper. All four corners are inhabited by 15-inch black alloy wheels.

Five occupants are bound to be impressed by the interior’s increased space, with the chiseled dashboard dominating the cabin. The fabric seats feature integrated headrests in front and adjustable ones at the back. Rear cargo space is pegged at 295 liters, expandable with the split-fold rear bench.

Standard on both Celerio variants are door pockets and up to six bottle holders which add to the model’s utility. Door and window locking switches are placed at the center console, just below the 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment audio with Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary input, and Weblink 2.0 connectivity options.

Just beyond the multi-function steering wheel with audio controls and tilt adjustment is a large 3D analog speedometer accompanied by a digital tachometer. A 12-volt accessory outlet is available for plugging in external accessories.

A 1.0-liter K10C 3-cylinder gasoline engine is the lone option under the hood for both Celerio variants, capable of 67 horsepower and 89 Nm of torque, slightly lower figures from the outgoing model.

However, the new power unit comes with an Engine Auto Stop Start System (EASS) a feature needed in these times of rising fuel prices. EASS stops the engine during extended idling to reduce both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. 

Customers can choose between a 5-speed manual or Suzuki Auto Gear Shift (AGS) transmission to engage the gears and spin the front wheels.

Both variants of the all-new Celerio are built on Suzuki’s light yet rigid HEARTECT platform, with the underbody structure and components optimized for reducing noise and vibration.  

Standard safety equipment includes five seatbelts, dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. However, only the AGS variant offers a segment-first hill-hold control.

While both 2022 Suzuki Celerio variants appeal to car buyers on account of their sub-Php 800,000 sticker price, it might take some convincing to justify the Php 46,000 difference between the stick shift and automated variants. This is especially considering that the two offer a practically identical feature set, with the automatic coming with hill-start assist.

But those looking for convenience will probably take the plunge, despite the AGS-equipped Celerio being a cool Php 168,000 more expensive than the S-Presso Special Edition that still comes with a manual. It’s a slight shame that the local Celerio release omits the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto found in the India-spec model, though. 

Nevertheless, the presence of additional safety features and a fuel-saving engine should be enough for the all-new Celerio to merit consideration, whichever variant customers go for.
