How does Toyota’s entry-level MPV measure up to the competition?

Among the changes that brings is the shift from a rear-wheel to a front-wheel drivetrain, which is expected to have an effect on ride quality and interior space. But what about the other aspects of the Avanza that long-time owners have grown accustomed to?

We’ll see how the 202 Toyota Avanza fares against its rivals in the compact MPV segment, namely the Honda BR-V, Mitsubishi Xpander, Suzuki Ertiga, and its own Innova stablemate.

2022 Toyota Avanza: Summary of specs

The third-generation Toyota Avanza specs start with three trim levels, divided into the base J, midrange E, and the range-topping G. Standard across the range is a length of 4,395mm and width of 1,730mm on a wheelbase of 2,750mm. Meanwhile, the height varies between 1,665mm and 1,700mm.

The all-new Avanza has changed in some respects while remaining the same in others

Minimum ground clearance for the new Avanza ranges from 180 to 190mm. It rolls on a selection of 15- and 16-inch wheels. Like its competitors, the Avanza continues to offer three-row seating for up to seven occupants.

The powertrain still consists of two options as far as the Toyota Avanza engine is concerned: a 1.3-liter gasoline offering 97 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque, along with a 1.5-liter version rated at 105 horsepower and 138 Nm of twist. A 5-speed manual transmission is the default offer, while the previous 4-speed automatic has been ditched in favor of a CVT.

2022 Toyota Avanza vs Honda BR-V

Against the Toyota Avanza dimensions, the Honda BR-V comes in two trim levels that are 61mm longer and 5mm wider. However, it stands up to 23mm lower than the Toyota, and features a wheelbase that’s 88mm shorter. The BR-V does have the upper hand in terms of ground clearance, measuring at 201mm.

A set of 16-inch alloy wheels are standard on the BR-V. Power comes in the form of a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine that kicks up 118 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque, slightly higher numbers than the Avanza. A continuously variable transmission is the only gearbox option available for the Honda.

2022 Toyota Avanza vs Mitsubishi Xpander

Mitsubishi’s MPV offering comes in three trim levels that stand 80mm longer and 20mm wider than the Avanza. The Xpander’s height of 1,695mm is topped only by the Avanza’s G variant at 1,700mm, while the former’s 2,775mm wheelbase exceeds that of the Toyota. Ground clearance for the Mitsubishi ranges between 200mm and 205mm, again edging out the Avanza.

Mitsubishi Xpander

Mitsubishi Xpander

Driving the Mitsubishi Xpander is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with variable valve timing that makes 103 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque, almost at par with the Avanza’s figures. Like the Avanza, the Xpander also offers a 5-speed manual gearbox for the base variant, accompanied by a 4-speed automatic on higher trims. Alloy wheels come in either 15- or 16-inch diameter.

2022 Toyota Avanza vs Suzuki Ertiga

At 4,395mm, the Suzuki Ertiga spans the same length as the Avanza while standing 5mm wider. However, the Suzuki’s 1,690mm height is 10mm lower than the Avanza G trim. A difference of 10mm is also evident in terms of wheelbase, which is in the Avanza’s favor. Ground clearance for the Suzuki is 180mm, identical to all but the top-spec Avanza.

Suzuki Ertiga

Spinning the Ertiga’s 15-inch alloy wheels is a 1.5-liter gasoline power unit that puts out 103 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque, similar to the Avanza’s larger engine. Two trim levels are offered on the Ertiga, with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

2022 Toyota Avanza vs Toyota Innova

Both the Avanza and Innova are MPV offerings from Toyota Motor Philippines, but the latter stands a healthy 340mm longer, 100mm wider, and up to 130mm higher. A wheelbase of 2,750mm is common between the two, although the Innova sits slightly lower with 178mm of ground clearance.
