It is important to learn how to use a car ramp even before purchasing it!

As a car owner, we have different tools and equipment used in the maintenance of our cars. Some of them also love to modify and work on their own car.

There are different tools like axle and jack stands which are a major must-have for anyone who owns a car or someone who fixes cars. However, car ramps are preferred by a larger group of car owners and enthusiast.

Car ramps are very useful, especially for lowered cars. It is also more stable than jack stands. You might have some trouble driving up on them at first, but your car will be stable when used properly. This is why Philkotse.com is here to help you with the step-by-step process of using car ramps.

I. Factors to consider when choosing a car ramp

Before using car ramps, you should make sure that you have quality car ramps. In choosing a car ramp, there are factors that should be considered.

1. Maximum rated load

The most important characteristic you should look for when choosing car ramps is its maximum rated load. The higher the maximum rated load the car ramps have, the safer. It is actually the rating of the ramp which refers to the maximum GVM or Gross Vehicle Weight.

The GVM is the weight capacity that can be driven onto the car ramp. The rating of the ramp should always be greater than your car’s GVM so that there is still a margin of error and/or for a front-heavy car.

Take note that the ratings indicated in the car ramps are usually assumed you’re using 2 ramps. Say, for example, the pair of car ramps are rated with 6,000 pounds. This car ramp will be able to hold the front half of the 6,000-pound car using both of the ramps together.

2. Country of manufacture

Car ramps manufactured in the European Union and the United States have stricter quality controls compared to ramps manufactured elsewhere. Although car ramps made from other countries are well-made and safe, you should still use caution when picking the right car ramp for you.

It is also wise to find out what other people think of a certain product before taking a risk.

3. Read reviews

Rates and reviews are very useful factors when considering a purchase on malls and especially online. The same goes for buying car ramps. Some car owners will tell horrifying stories of ramps collapsing even when the vehicle is under the rated load.

The risks might be low but it is very deadly. Which is why it is always worth to search online for other user’s opinions.

4. Check if you really need a low-clearance ramp

If you need a ramp that has a more gradual incline, then a low-clearance ramp is best for you. This type of ramp is perfect for car owners that own a sports car so that when they drive it up the ramp, there will be no scrapping in its undercarriage. Take note that these ramps are expensive, so buy them if you are that a regular ramp won’t do.

5. Check if the ramp has a rubber stop

You should purchase car ramps that have a rubber component in its underside.  It is very helpful so that the car ramp will not slide when the car is starting to drive them up. It’s very important especially if you’re working on smooth surfaces.

6. Check if ramps have signs of damage

Get rid of ramps that show signs of damages like cracks, rust, and any other types of damages.

7. Buy wheel chocks too

It is recommended to use at least 2 wheel chocks every time you use car ramps. You will never go wrong using chocks. However, if your garage floor is slippery and smooth, it’s advisable to buy soft rubber chocks.

II. Tips to use car ramps properly

1. Slide car ramps in front of the tires

Place the lower slope of the ramp in front of the tire. Make sure the ramp is perfectly centered and positioned with the tires. Check along the car sides to make sure that the ramps are as straight as possible.

Turn the wheels then move them, making sure that they’re pointing in the straight direction then try again.  Always remember to work on concrete, paved, level or hard surface – avoiding slippery or wet surfaces. This will make it more difficult for the car to drive up the ramp without it sliding.

2. Drive up the center of the ramps

Drive the car up the ramp then get out to check if the wheels are exactly centered on both ramps and on the flat portion of the ramps. Make sure the tires are fully on the ramps, if not, try it again.

Usually, ramps have small bumps that indicate that you already reached the ramp’s edge. But if you think, it’s not enough, you can ask a friend to help spot you so that you’ll not drive it over.

If you notice that the ramps would slide forward when you drive, try to drive a bit faster but always keep it cautious and smooth. If it doesn’t work, try holding the ramps in place by placing a board or wood between the ramp and the wall.

3. Engage parking brake

Once, you’re sure that the car is already centered, engage the emergency brake to make sure that the car will not roll back down. Stand on the side of the car then gently rock it, ensuring that it’s stable.

4. Place 2 wheels chocks on the back wheel

Put a wheel chock behind the back wheel and another on the front. The wheel chocks will provide additional safety, keeping the car from rolling in different directions. Then you’re all set. You can now access the underside of the car safely.

5. Things to remember

  • Never disassemble car parts that could free the brakes or the transmission while working under the car.
  • Don’t try or make and use a self-made ramp. Car ramps may look simple that you can use your own made, but car ramps that are commercially made are sturdier and safer to use.
