Nissan X-Trail debuts in Japan with e-POWER 

Nissan has finally launched the all-new X-Trail. For now, it is only available in the Japanese market. Then again, we are pretty sure that this model will eventually trickle to other regions like here in the Philippines.

Now, what’s interesting about the new X-Trail besides being a next-generation model, is the fact that like the new Nissan Kicks, it also comes with an e-POWER system. 

Let’s check it out in detail. 

Exterior

Style-wise, the new Nissan X-Trail looks exactly the same as the one that was previewed in our previous X-Trail article in 2021.  

This is known as the Nissan 3.0 design language, and it features a sizable V-motion grille, a sharp-looking two-tiered adaptive LED lighting, as well as aggressive-looking details all around.

All trims also feature a two-tone color scheme, and depending on the variant, it also gets roof rails. From the rear, the new X-Trail also gets a pair of boomerang-shaped LED taillights.

Interior

For the Japanese market, the 2023 Nissan X-Trail is also available in both five-seater, and seven-seater configurations. Upper-spec variants then get plenty of soft-touch, leather-clad surfaces.

All variants however, are kitted out with a well-arranged interior featuring a flat-bottom steering wheel, physical buttons for the automatic air-conditioning system, and a sleek-looking dashboard.

Moreover, the rear cabin gets plenty of charging ports, a versatile cargo space by way for split-folding seats, rear window shades, sizable cup holders, and a console lid that also functions as an armrest. 

Tech & safety

For the driver, the X-Trail provides a digital gauge cluster, as well as a windshield projected heads-up display. 

Handling on-board entertainment for this model is a 12.3-inch headunit that uses the NissanConnect navigation system. Is it also equipped with Amazon Alexa, and is paired to a Bose Premium Sound System.

Safety-wise, the next-gen Nissan X-Trail is kitted out with plenty of advanced driver assist technologies. These include the Nissan Safety Assist 360. This consists of several cameras, radar, as well as sonar systems to monitor the exterior of the vehicle.

Furthermore, the X-Trail also gets the ProPILOT, the Japanese marque’s autonomous driving technology. This allows this Nissan-made crossover to automatically slow down or speed up to match a particular area’s posted speed limit, and keep the vehicle within a lane. 

The ProPILOT can also control the vehicle’s brakes, gearbox, and steering in order for it to park itself.

Engine & Performance

If one remembers, we’ve also speculated about the possibility that the X-Trail might get the e-POWER system back in 2021 as Nissan did express its continued commitment to exploring a more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly powertrain for its products.  

Specifically, the all-new X-Trail uses the e-POWER technology combined with the Nissan VC-Turbo 1.5-liter inline-3 gasoline engine.

Of note, the technology is similar to the e-POWER system on the smaller Nissan Kicks, but the X-Trail is indeed a bit more powerful. At maximum, the e-POWER system on the Xtrail can produce up to 187 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque. Compare that to the Nissan Kicks which can churn out 136 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque.  

This is unsurprising since it was logical for Nissan to utilize the e-POWER system on more models. This however, is exciting at the same time, as it also proves that the Nissan e-POWER system can be scaled up to be stronger, and thus it has the potential to work with larger platforms.

Moreover, it also comes with the e-Pedal Step which allows for single pedal driving. This is because it features automatic braking when releasing the accelerator pedal. Setting the new X-Trail apart from the Philippine-spec Nissan Kicks is that it also gets the Nissan e-4ORCE four-wheel-drive system. Then again, do note that the Japanese-spec Kicks also comes with this drivetrain. 

Price

Prices for this new model then range from 3,198,800 Yen to 4,499,000 Yen before taxes. That’s equivalent to a range of Php 1,306,000 to Php 1,836,000 at the current exchange rates. 

Also, Nissan Philippines is yet to say anything about bringing this new model in. But as we’ve said above, we can speculate that it might get a local release since there’s a compact crossover-sized hole in the local Nissan model lineup right now. Fingers crossed.
